Welcome to the Technical Vocational Education-Computer Systems Servicing 7 Project


CAP-LRE Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Testing Electronic Components.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed, and reviewed by educators both from
public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire
the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

Electronic gadgets have become an integral part of our lives. They have made
our lives more comfortable and convenient. From aviation to medical and healthcare
industries, electronic gadgets have a wide range of applications in the modern world.
In fact, the electronics revolution and the computer revolution go hand in hand.

COMMON COMPONENTS AND THEIR SCHEMATIC SYMBOLS

Non Polarized Capacitor


Common types are Mylar and
Ceramic. is a type of capacitor

Electrolytic Capacitor
It is polarized type of capacitor. It
is used where high levels of
capacitance are required, but to
provide long reliable service it
must be used correctly and
within its specifications.
Rectifier Diode
Used primarily in converting AC
to DC. It allows current to flow
easily in one direction, but
severely restricts current from
flowing in the opposite direction.

Light Emitting Diode


Emits light when current flow
through it.

Transformer
This is an electrical device
which, by the principles of
electromagnetic induction,
transfers electrical energy from
one electric circuit to another,
without changing the frequency.

Inductor
It is also called a coil, choke, or
reactor, is a passive two-
terminal electrical component
that stores energy in a magnetic
field when electric current flows
through it.
NPN Transistor
The three leads are: base,
emitter, and collector. It
regulates current or voltage
flow.
PNP Transistor
The PNP transistor has two
crystal diodes connected back
to back. In PNP transistor, the
majority current carriers are
holes and electrons are the
minority current carriers.
Integrated Circuit (IC)
Composed of resistors, diodes,
and transistors in a package.

Speaker
An audio output device.

Relay Switch
Electrically controlled switch
that is typically operated by
using electromagnetism to
operate a mechanical switching
mechanism.

10. Polarized Capacitor

An electronic technician or troubleshooter must have an intensive


knowledge of electronics, test equipment, troubleshooting techniques, and
equipment repair. Analog and digital circuits occasionally fail, and in most cases
a technician is required to identify the problem within the system and then make
a repair. The procedure for fixing a failure can be broken down into three basic
steps.

Step 1: DIAGNOSE
The first step is to determine whether a problem really exists. To carry out this
step, a technician must collect as much information about the system, the circuit,
and the components used, and then diagnose the problem.

Step 2: ISOLATE
The second step is to apply a logical and sequential reasoning process to isolate
the problem. In this step, a technician will operate, observe, test, and apply
troubleshooting techniques to isolate the malfunction.

Step 3: REPAIR
The third and final step is to make the actual repair and final test the circuit. To
troubleshoot, you will need a thorough knowledge of troubleshooting techniques,
a very good understanding of test equipment, documentation in the form of
technical and service manuals, and experience.

You need enough knowledge and skills in troubleshooting and


familiarization on a different tools and components to be repaired.

BASIC MEASURING AND TEST EQUIPMENT

It is the job of a test technician to know which piece of test equipment to use for
the task at hand and understand the limitations of the test equipment they are using.

Multimeter
Also known as a VOM (Volt-Ohm
meter), a multi-meter is a
handheld device that combines
several measurement functions
(such as voltage, current,
resistance and frequency) into a
single unit.

Multi-meters are mainly used to


troubleshoot electrical problems in
a wide array of industrial and
household devices such as
electronic equipment, motor
controls, domestic appliances,
power supplies, and wiring
systems.

Low-Resistance Ohmmeter
Often called a DLRO in the field,
the low-resistance ohmmeter is
used for making high-precision
resistance measurements below 1
ohm. Low-Resistance ohmmeters
produce low voltage DC currents
via battery power with outputs of
up to 100A.

Analog multimeters are


instruments that are used to
measure electrical quantities such
as voltage, current, resistance,
frequency, and signal power. Basic
functionality includes
measurement of potential in volts,
resistance in ohms, and current in
amps. Analog multimeters are
used to find electronic and
electrical problems. Advanced
units come with more features
such as capacitor, diode, and IC
testing modes.

COMPONENT SUBSTITUTION

In many cases it is possible to replace a failed component with an exact


replacement. The use of "exact" is often critical. Unfortunately, there are times when an
exact replacement is unavailable. This is particularly true if the equipment is old or
imported. In such cases you may have no choice but to substitute with a close rather
than exact replacement. This is permissible in many cases, provided that several
important factors are kept in mind.

a. Transformer
Replacement should have the same turns ratio, voltage/current ratio, and rating as the
original component. The power rating (VA) and frequency range are also important.

b. Transistor
Transistor substitution is common, particularly with lower cost equipment. In some cases,
you may have a choice between a few different transistors. At other times, the
replacement must be exact.

c. Resistors
Be sure that the replacement component has the same power rating and resistance
value. Its tolerance must be at least as good and can be better.

d. Capacitors
Ensure that the replacement component has the same capacitance value as that of the
original, and that its tolerance is the same or better. The working voltage rating must also
be the same or better (greater).

e. Other Components
The same considerations apply to other types of components (diodes, fuses, speakers,
etc.). In every case, it is necessary to proceed with caution, and to be sure that the
replacement is correctly rated.

Datasheet

A datasheet is a document, printed or electronic that provides details about a product,


like a computer, computer component, or software program. The datasheet includes
information that helps in making a buying decision about a product by providing technical
specifications about the product.
