General Information
Note
: Warranty repairs must be performed at a Cummins® Authorized Repair
Location to accurately calibrate, test, and repair the fuel systems on Cummins®
engines.
The injectors used on V28 engines are the PT (Type D) style injectors with and without the top
stop feature. To adjust the
injector overhead setting after installation, use a torque wrench to
apply 8 N•m [70 in-lb].

If the tappets do not have crowned rollers, apply 6 N•m [50 in-lb] preload to the injector and
adjusting screw.

Note
: The injector plunger and the barrel are machined to a very precise tolerance
and are available as a match-fit assembly only. Do not mix the plungers and the
barrels. Always replace the plunger and the barrel as a matched assembly if the
injector is rebuilt.
When removing the injectors from the engine, compare the injector assembly part number with
the appropriate Control Parts
List (CPL) assembly part number listed in the CPL manual. If the
numbers do not match, either replace the injector or rebuild it to match the assemblies required.

Preparatory Steps
 WARNING 

Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the

possibility of personal injury, always ventilate the
compartment before
servicing the batteries. To reduce the
possibility of arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable
first and attach the negative
(-) battery cable last.

Disconnect the batteries. Refer to the original equipment

manufacturer (OEM) service manual.
Remove the rocker lever cover and all related parts. Refer
to Procedure 003-011 in Section 3.
(/qs3/pubsys2/xml/en/procedures/15/15-003-011-tr.html)

Remove
Loosen the adjusting screw lock nut on the injector.

Turn out the adjusting screw on the injector rocker lever.

 CAUTION 
Do not drop or damage the injector plunger.

Move the injector push rod to the side.

Rotate the rocker lever up.

Remove the injector link.

Remove the two clamp capscrews and the injector hold down
clamp.

Use a universal injector puller, Part Number 3376872, to

remove the injector from the cylinder head injector bore.

Clean and Inspect for Reuse

 CAUTION 

Do not remove the injector plungers or allow the plungers

to fall out of the injector body. Injector plungers and
barrels
have a very precise fit and are damaged easily.

Remove and discard the three injector o-rings.

 WARNING 
When using solvents, acids, or alkaline materials for
cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for
use. Wear goggles
and protective clothing to reduce the
possibility of personal injury.

Use a clean, lint-free cloth to clean the exterior of the injectors.

Use solvent to clean the injector plunger links.

Check the injector plunger links for damage, excessive wear,

and pitting or scoring on the ball ends.

Note
: If the plunger link is damaged, or the pitting or
scoring can be seen or felt, the plunger links must be
replaced.

Check the injector for carbon deposits on the injector cup and
cup retainer.

Check the o-ring grooves for damage.

Check the injector body and cup retainer for cracks or other
damage.

Check the orifice screen for damage, contamination, or metal

particles.
Note
: If damaged or contaminated parts are found, the
injectors must be replaced or rebuilt.

Rebuild
The disassembly, inspection, repair, and calibration procedure
for the injectors are covered in the Injector Rebuild Manual
-
PT, Bulletin 3379071.

Calibrate
The injector calibration specifications and parts information are
provided in the Injector Specifications Manual, Bulletin
3379664.

The Control Parts List (CPL) Manual, Bulletin 4021328, is a

listing of basic engine parts and timing specifications that are
necessary to produce a given engine performance. The CPL
number stamped on the engine dataplate is used to identify
parts
within the engine, including the injectors.

Install
Install three new o-rings on each injector.

Lubricate the o-rings with vegetable oil before installation of

the injector in the cylinder head.

Install the injector in the cylinder head injector bore.

 CAUTION 
Make sure to place the instrument on the body of the
injector and not on the plunger or the link.

Use a clean blunt instrument to seat the injector in the bore.

A snap will be heard and felt as the injector is seated.

Install the hold-down clamp and the capscrews over the body
of the injector.
Note
: Top stop injectors and non-top stop injectors do
not use the same hold-down clamp.

Note
: It is very important to tighten the capscrews
alternately. If the clamp is not flat against the injector,
premature malfunction is possible.
Tighten the capscrews alternately and evenly.

Torque Value:
1. 6
n•m
[

]

2. 18
n•m

 CAUTION 

Do not drop the push rods.

Use clean 15W-40 oil to lubricate both ends of the injector link.
Install the injector link.

Align the push rod with the injector rocker lever.
