Clear filtrate tank was being filled. The pump to remove water from it was running. Valve downstream of
pump was closed, deadheading the pump was closed preventing removal of water thus causing overflow.
At 4:41 am the area supervisor contacted the Environmental Manager who in turn contacted Northern A-1.

Estimated release of water to storm drain was approximately between 2,000 t0 3,000 gallons. GPI used
contractor Northern A-1 to recover water and complete the cleanup. There was no evidence of release of water at
outlet of the storm sewer drain. Also, there was no evidence of any release of water to Kalamazoo River.

The area supervisor directed Graphic Packaging (GPI) employees covered to the
impacted catch basin to prevent water from entering it. Upon arrival Northern A-1
vacuumed up the water retained in the drainage swale. Then proceed to vacuum the
storm sewer catch basins and followed that with jetting the storm sewer lines to flush any
remaining residual into the vacuum truck. The water that was recovered was discharged
to the GPI wastewater pretreatment plant.
The storm water outfall outfall was check twice Thursday morning, before and after the
storm sewer cleaning by Northern A-1. Additional checks were conducted on Friday
(October 21st.) and the following Monday with EGLE staff. No evidence of the spill was
observed in any of the outfall observations.
