 Based on the painting of David Bailly entitled ‘Selbstbildnis mit Vanita ssymbolen’, we
assume that the meaning of it is the desire of temporary material things on earth which
no one will be able to bring in the afterlife. It was depicted through pearl necklaces and
gold coins next to the skull and withered flowers which may imply the inevitability of
death. There is also a shadow of a girl behind the tall glass who is assumed to be
Bailly’s deceased wife. The self portrait of the artist in which he is older may imply that
over time, all of us will mature and be able to gain wisdom from our own experiences in
life. Overall, this painting shows us the transience or shortness of life, the useless and
temporary happiness provided by material things and the certainty of death.
3 Based on your answers, write an assumption about what the painting means in the space
below.
2. Based on your answers, write an assumption about what the painting means. (10 points)
 The Self-Portrait with Vanitas Symbols by David Bailly is a painting that is full of
symbolism. The entire collection function about a young man, the painter itself whose
face displays the feature of a self-portrait. The painting anticipates his future age, which
was conveyed in the painting. Life on earth is as brief and transitory as an extinguished
candle, a fragile bubble, a toppled glass or a faded flower. The hourglass and skull are
reminders of death, which is always close by. And once you’re dead, any riches are
insignificant, regardless of how many strings of pearls or gold coins you may own.

1. What are the hurdles of accessing art in terms of its subject and content?

 The hurdles in accessing art in terms of its subject and content is that art is very
unpredictable and Every work of art has a profound significance or depicts a variety of
meanings. Art cannot be explained as easy as what others think as it has deep meaning in
every piece of art. However, we have different perspective in viewing one's opinion and it
depends upon the viewer on how they will understand it.

2. where do artist source their subjects?

 Artists use their imagination or their senses to source their subjects. Their inspirations
may also be used as their subjects.

3. Name an example of an artwork and speculate on the content of the artwork based on its
factual, conventional, and subjective meanings.

 Mona Lisa, also known as La Gioconda, is the wife of Francescodel Giocondo. This
painting is painted as oil on wood that is widely considered to be the most famous
painting in the world. The painting presents a woman in half body portrait, which has as
a backdrop a distant landscape. Mona Lisa's famous smile represents the sitter and
Leonardo made this notion of happiness the central motif of the portrait: it is this notion
that makes the work such an ideal.

Let’s make it happen/Post – Test 2

Watch the BBC documentary about Botticelli’s Venus: The making of an Icon,
(http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/bO7OsqbO). Write a reflection paper regarding the said
documentary. Your task is to make a one hundred words report or reflection of what you’ve
watched. Be honest and no copying in others work. I know if it is a copy paste, I’ve already read
the comments in the video.

 Botticelli’s Birth of Venus was perceived as radical, unknown and shocking in its day, yet
is now one of the most celebrated paintings in Western art. Not just as a symbol of
sublime, feminine beauty but a worldwide icon; reproduced, modified, imitated and
reflected on in the work of countless artists, fashion designers, graphic artists,
advertising directors and film-makers. Botticelli was a Renaissance painter who lived in
the Birth of Venus is one of the most well-known works of art. Between 1484 and 1485,
Botticelli painted the Birth of Venus. The victorious Goddess of Love and Beauty is
depicted in the painting. Venus was her Roman name, while Aphrodite was her Greek
name. At the middle of the canvas, she stands erect and nude, looking ethereal and
luminous. She appears to attract all attention to herself; a physical and spiritual symbol
of beauty. Contemplating her beauty, according to neo platonic thinkers, is a way to
elevate the human spirit and draw closer to the divine. The Renaissance was a period
when depictions of mythological subjects became common. To express humanistic
ideals, allegories from classical culture, Olympian divinities, and their mythologies were
used. And Botticelli's birthplace, Florence, was a major center for humanist science.
Here, Cosimo de' Medici the Elder founded a Platonic Academy, led by philosopher
Marsilio Ficino. Botticelli followed a pattern with his Birth of Venus, speaking the
language of the educated and pleasing his patrons. The myth behind the painting
According to Hesiod, the Greek poet who wrote the Theogony, Venus was created from
sea foam. Blood and brutality abound in ancient myths, and this story is no exception.
Cronus, the son of the God Uranus, overthrew his father, castrating him and tossing his
genitals into the sea, according to legend. Venus was born as a result of this fertilizations
of the water. She was born on a shell and was forced ashore by the breath of Zephyrus,
the god of the west wind. Zephyrus is portrayed in the painting embracing the nymph
Chloris. One of the Hours is thought to be the girl about to cover Venus with a flowery
mantle. They were Venus' mythological handmaidens who also had influence over the
seasons' natural cycle. Cyprus is the island where she arrives. The Starry Night, an
infamous painting by artist Vincent Van Gogh, is one of the most well-known works of
art in history. Because of the dark cypress tree and the bleak night sky on the painting,
he clearly wants to imply that he is lonely. He or a negative emotion is represented by the
tree. This is a view from outside of his medical care. While seeking treatment for his
mental illness, he painted his own interpretation of the views he could see through his
window. With points of light on the streets, his description is dreamy. Because of the
dark cypress tree and the bleak night sky on the painting, he clearly wants to imply that
he is lonely. He or a negative emotion is represented by the tree. Despite the loneliness
around him and the city where he is, the biggest star in the painting is actually the planet
Venus, which provides light and warmth.
