Definition: A solid bounded by closed cylindrical surface and two parallel planes. The two parallel
planes are called the bases of a cylinder.

Sample Problems
1. Find the lateral surface area (A), total surface area (S) and volume (V) of the right circular cylinder
below.
18 ft
16 ft
r
Solution:
Lateral Surface Area:
LSA = 2𝝅𝒓𝒉
LSA = 2(3.1416)(9ft)(16ft)
TSA = 1413.72ft2
Volume:
V = 𝝅𝒓𝟐 𝒉
V = 3.1416(9ft)2(16ft)
V = 4071.51 ft3
2. A right circular cylindrical tank 20 feet high and a base radius of 4 feet, contains water to a depth
of 10 feet. Find the volume of the tank, volume of the water and the wetted part. Assume π = 3.1416
20 ft
10 ft
4 ft
Solution:
V = 𝝅𝒓𝟐 𝒉
V = (3.1416)(4ft)2(20ft)
V = 1005.31ft3
Volume of the water in the tank
V = 𝝅𝒓𝟐 𝒉
V = (3.1416)(4ft)2(10ft)
V = 502.66ft3
W = B + LSA
W = 𝝅𝒓𝟐 + 2𝝅𝒓𝒉
W = (3.1416)(4ft)2 + 2(3.1416)(4ft)(10ft)
W = 50.27ft2 + 251.33ft2
W = 301.60ft2
3. A cylindrical tank of height 10 cm has a lateral surface area of 277 cm 2. Find the volume (V) and
total surface area (S) of the tank.
𝟐𝟕𝟕 𝒄𝒎𝟐
r = 𝟔𝟐.𝟖𝟑𝟐 𝒄𝒎
r = 4.41 cm
For volume:
V = 𝝅𝒓𝟐 𝒉
V = (3.1416)(4.41cm)2(10cm)
V = 610.98cm3
S = 2𝑩 + 𝑨
S = 399.2 cm2
