CO4: CALCULATE torsional shear stress in shaft and buckling on the column.

Problems on Torsion

1. The torques shown are exerted on pulleys A and B knowing that both shafts are solid,
determine the maximum shearing stress in (a) in shaft AB, (b) in shaft BC. [Beer &
Johnsto, P. No 3.9]

2. The steel shaft is formed by attaching a hollow shaft to a solid shaft. Determine the
maximum torque T that can be applied to the ends of the shaft without exceeding a shear
stress of 70 MPa or an angle of twist of 2:50 in the 3.5-m length. Use G = 83 GPa for steel.
[Pytel P. No 3.8]

3. The compound shaft consists of bronze and steel segments, both having 120-mm diameters.
If the torque T causes a maximum shear stress of 100 MPa in the bronze segment, determine
the angle of rotation of the free end. Use G = 83 GPa for steel and G =35 GPa for bronze.

4. Four pulleys are attached to the 50-mm-diameter aluminum shaft. If torques are applied to
the pulleys as shown in the figure, determine the angle of rotation of pulley D relative to
pulley A. Use G = 28 GPa for aluminum Pytel;_ P. No 3.14]

5. A compound shaft consisting of a steel segment and an aluminum segment is acted upon by
two torques as shown in Fig. P-316. Determine the maximum permissible value of T subject
to the following conditions: τst = 83 MPa, τal = 55 MPa, and the angle of rotation of the free
end is limited to 6°. For steel, G = 83 GPa and for aluminum, G = 28 GPa.

6. A solid steel shaft in a rolling mill transmits 20 kW of power at 2 Hz. Determine the
smallest safe diameter of the shaft if the shear stress is not to exceed 40 MPa and the angle
of twist is limited to 60in a length of 3 m. Use G = 83 GPa.
7. Two forces, each of magnitude P, are applied to the wrench. The diameter of the steel shaft
AB is 15 mm. Determine the largest allowable value of P if the shear stress in the shaft is
not to exceed 120 MPa and its angle of twist is limited to 5_. Use G = 80 GPa for steel.

8. A circular tube with an outside diameter of 80 mm and an inside diameter of 60 mm is
subjected to a torque T = 4.0 kNm. The tube is made of aluminum alloy 7075-T6. (a)
Determine the maximum shear, tensile, and compressive stresses in the tube and show these
stresses on sketches of properly oriented stress elements. (b) Determine the corresponding
maximum strains in the tube and show these strains on sketches of the deformed elements.

9. A hollow steel rod 200 mm long is to be used as torsional spring. The ratio of inside to
outside diameter is 1 : 2. The required stiffness of this spring is 100 N.m /degree. Determine
the outside diameter of the rod. Value of G is 8×104 N/mm2.
10. A hollow shaft and a solid shaft construction of the same material have the same length and
the same outside radius. The inside radius of the hollow shaft is 0.6 times of the outside
radius. Both the shafts are subjected to the same torque. (i) What is the ratio of maximum
shear stress in the hollow shaft to that of solid shaft? (ii) What is the ratio of angle of twist
in the hollow shaft to that of solid shaft?
11. In a torsion test, the specimen is a hollow shaft with 50 mm external and 30 mm internal
diameter. An applied torque of 1.6kN-m is found to produce an angular twist of 0.4º
measured on a length of 0.2 m of the shaft. The Young’s modulus of elasticity obtained
from a tensile test has been found to be 200 GPa. Find the values of (i) Modulus of rigidity.
(ii) Poisson’s ratio.

Problems on Buckling of column
12. A 2-m-long pin-ended column of square cross section is to be made of wood. Assuming E =
13 GPa, all =12 MPa, and using a factor of safety of 2.5 in computing Euler’s critical load
for buckling, determine the size of the cross section if the column is to safely support (a) a
100-kN load, (b) a 200-kN load. [S S Ratan]
13. Determine the critical load of a steel tube that is 5 m long and has a 100-mm outer diameter
and a 16-mm wall thickness. Use E =200 GPa.
14. Each of the five struts shown consists of a solid steel rod. (a) Knowing that the strut of Fig.
(1) is of a 20-mm diameter; determine the factor of safety with respect to buckling for the
loading shown. (b) Determine the diameter of each of the other struts for which the factor of
safety is the same as the factor of safety obtained in part a. Use E = 200 GPa.

15. Euler's critical load for a column with both ends hinged is found as 40 kN. What would be
the change in the critical load if both ends are fixed?
16. A hollow cast iron column of 300 mm external diameter and 220 mm internal diameter is
used as a column 4 m long with both ends hinged. Determine the safe compressive load the
column can carry without buckling using Euler's formula. E = 0.7×105 N/mm2, FOS = 4,
Crushing Stress (σc ) = 567 N/mm2
17. A bar of length 4 m when used as a simply supported beam and subjected to an uniformly
distributed load of 30kN/m over the whole span, deflects 15mm at the center. Determine the
crippling loads when it is used as a column with the following conditions: (i) both ends pin
jointed (ii) one end fixed and other end hinged and (iii) both ends fixed
18. A 1.5m long column has a circular cross section of 5 cm diameter. One end of the column is
fixed in direction and position and other is free. Taking factor of safety as 3. Calculate the
safe load using Euler’s formula. take yield point stress as 560 MN/m2and α=1/1600 for
pinned ends. Young’s modulus for Cast Iron =120 GN/m2.
