At the very beginning, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to almighty God for giving me the
strength and the composure to complete my internship and prepare this report within the scheduled time.
During the period of my internship work, I have received generous help from many quarters, which I
like to put on record here with deep gratitude and great pleasure.
First and foremost, I am grateful to my supervisor, Eric k. Wiredu, mechanical department. He allowed
me to encroach upon his precious time freely right from the very beginning of my internship work until
the completion.
1.1 INTRODUCTION
As part of educational reform programs, the polytechnics were upgraded to tertiary level as to provide
training for middle man power to the challenges of today’s market or employments demands.
In tune of the policy above, the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND).
Certificate demands students to undergo an industrial attachment to enable them have a practical feel
of what has been taught and what is yet to be taught in order to abreast themselves in their fields of
study. In accordance with the above, I undertook my practical training attachment at GRATIS
FOUNDATION, Takoradi.
The main objective of this industrial attachment is to provide an opportunity for students to acquire the
ability and skills to basic knowledge and techniques to realization of corporate objectives and a better
understanding of the engineering world.
1. The industrial attachment is to help HND graduate to fit into the engineering world.
2. HND graduates will find it easier to face problems met on the field due to the industrial attachment.
3. HND graduates learn about the norms and values governing the various companies.
6. Industrial attachment serves as a ground for helping trainees acquire the self-concept. Precisely
accepting him/her as he/she fits to the society.
Industrial attachment as a whole has got so many vital things to trainees which definitely serve as benefit
to the trainee. This benefit includes the following;
1. The industrial attachment has helped me acquire knowledge about the nature of work done at my
department.
4. It has also helped in broadening my mind on the course am studying and what I have learnt relating
to my department.
5. It can also create job opportunity for me when the authorities realized I worked to their satisfaction.
6. It has also helped me familiarize myself with the nature of work done so that when I acquire a job,
there wouldn’t be any difficulty.
7. Lastly, it has enabled me to know the practical aspect of whatever I am learning at school. I have
learnt the practical aspect of all the theories I studied. It has also made it clarified and understandable.
CHAPTER TWO
It was evolved from the Ghana Regional Appropriate Technology Industrial project service (GRATIS)
project who was established in 1995 by the Government of Ghana with support from the European
Union and the Canadian Intonations and national development agency to promote small scale industries
in Ghana. GRATIS FOUNDATION can be contacted on;
Its vision statement, mission statement, departments and major activities or concern and core values are
started below.
1. Vision
To be among the first class African foundation to build a firm and healthy nation by helping to put up
a lot of small scale industries to kill unemployment in the country.
2. Mission
To offer higher quality works and meeting the increasing demand for effective management of clients
satisfaction and if affordable and acceptable by giving value to money of their valuable customers.
3. CORE VALUES
Team work, Employee health and safety, People development, Passion for winning, Integrity, Customer
focus, Honesty & integrity, Loyalty and Continuous improvement.
2.3 DEPARTMENTS
Gratis Foundation in order to discharge its duties effectively currently has four (4) departments such as
the Administration,
Security Unit, Plant and production department, and the other is Welding and fabrication department.
1. ADMINISTRATION
The company is handled of this department, they manage the affairs of the company in terms of
development, transaction, purchasing of need of various department as well as accountancy.
2. SECURITY UNIT
They ensure that the company’s properties are in the right order at the various units.
3. PLANT AND PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT
Are responsible for all machine works and setups works in the shop. They also prepare all kinds of
Shaft, Machine Operations, Maintenance and many others.
This department does all kinds of welding work such as Arc welding, Gas welding and more and also
comes with a different design of works
CHAPTER THREE
During my attachment programme with the organization, I was assigned to join the plant and production
department for all the machine works that comes to the shop for maintenance purposes to have a further
knowledge practical work and assisting them in most of the works that comes in. After assisting them
for some time I was able to fix some of the machines that comes in for maintenance and also able to
operate some of the Machines in the shop as well.
The official commencement date for the 2022/2023 academic year industrial attachment was 16th
August 2021. Fortunately, I was accepted at Gratis Foundation to start the training on 15 August due to
some factors.
First week, I was giving a general orientation about the company and how it function, I was also taken
through a safety program, We also learnt about the general safety rules and regulations in the workshop,
from there we started observing and assisting them in some of the work activities that comes to the
department. We helped in building a water tank stand for the first week.
Second week, we learnt how to use the lathe machine perform various kinds of operations and how to
use the Vernier calliper to check the diameter of a shaft and hole as well as marking out ,cutting and
drilling holes in work pieces
Third week, we learnt how to cut external threads on the lathe machine and turning between centres as
well using the lathe operations.
Fourth week, the industrial attachment has given me the chance to acquire much goals and knowledge
applications such as;
1. WELDING
During my attachment I was able to learn how to weld and acquire the techniques involved in Arc
welding.
2. DRILLING
During my attachment I was able to learn how to use the drilling machine to drill holes or drill through
already created indentations as well.
During my attachment I was able to learn how to perform some of the lathe operations, like facing,
boring, turning between centres, drilling, thread cutting etc.
During my attachment I was able to learn how to check the balance of crankshaft grinding machine
stone and it was my first time of seeing such machine.
This industrial attachment training helped me to put up a good human relation between the workers and
I.I also improved my ability of communication skills within my training.
6. GEARS
During my attachment I was able to learn how to calculate before you cut a gear and various kind of
gears we have in the engineering firm.
1. NEW KNOWLEDGE
I can now say that; I have now learnt a lot in terms of practical on the field. In fact, the industrial
attachment is very good. I now have more knowledge about the machines and more. I also know how
they function. Now, I will be able to identify the machines and also talk more about them if I’m being
asked about them anywhere I found myself.
2. SKILLS
I have also learnt some techniques in tackling a problem and I can cope with the working hours. I also
learnt some safety precautions at the department. The rate at which I used to work previously is now
better.
3.4 CHALLENGES
Being my first time at the practical field, I found it difficult to cope with the long working hours, I also
encountered the problem of Identifying tools at the department. I also worked slowly at the initial stage.
Because I was a trainee was not allowed to operation any machine. The believe I had no knowledge
about the machines, so I was just observing how the machine operator runs all the machine.
3.5 CONTRIBUTIONS
My industrial attachment at Gratis Foundation indeed added a great value to the company. I can proudly
talk of the following;
1. I helped in a clean-up exercise which was carried out at the end of the month.
2. I assisted my supervisor in running daily checks on some machine by filling a form before production
begins.
3. I assisted some engineers in doing some minor works which were supposed to be done by them like
blowing of air filters, lubrication, greasing, tightening of loose parts, tightening of some bolts and nuts
were done by me.
Gratis Foundation should make more room for attachment students, in order for students to be able to
learn more of the practical work. I will like to congratulate the management of Gratis Foundation on
the grounds of interpersonal relationship that exist among the staff and me and how they were ready to
work with morale and safety cautions.
3.7 OBSERVATIONS
1. One recommendable activity is the safety meetings which the staffs regularly attend.
3. Good intrapersonal l relationship among staff and has the cooperate mission at heart.
3.8 IMPRESSIONS
My gratitude goes to my senior superiors in charge (Mr. George Twumasi) and (Mr. Eric K. Wiredu)
who assisted me directly towards a cherished practical experience of work ethics and application of
learned academic knowledge into reality. I sincerely thank them for not seeing me to be just an
attachment trainer only, but also progress safe journey dream of building up my career.
3.9 SUMMARY
Introduction to brief history of GRATIS FOUNDATION. Introduction to work on the lathe machine,
example; Boring, Reaming, Drilling, Kunrling, Turning, Facing, Thread cutting, etc. Drilling machine,
applications, parts and it care and maintenance. Cutting of Angle iron with the help of power hacksaw.
I learnt how to check the balance of the crankshaft grinding machine stone and its set up, we produced
external threads, water tank, maintenance of the crankshaft grinding machine stone and produced shaft
for it. We produced mill machine shaft, cutting of gears and formula for calculating before you cut a
gear
CHAPTER FOUR
4.1 RECOMMENDATION
I recommend that internship in university is not only required for graduation but every student opt to
do an internship to gain on the job experience. Internship teaches students how to relation with people
and how to express themselves between elderly people as well.
4.2 CONCLUSION
As an attachment trainee in the engineering department of Gratis Foundation, it was not easy. It took
time to cope with procedures in the department because that was my first exposure to a working
environment. The training was really great and successful. Meeting and working together with people
like parents and relating to them as course mates, working under intense pressure was tough. I would
again wish to conclude that the industrial attachment instituted by the university authorities is a good
thing and wish to express that it should be enforced strictly for every student to undertake it, as it serves
as a performing stage for students and create their awareness of their field of study.
