HEALTH TEACHING PLAN

I. TOPIC: Health threat: Alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking

II. RATIONALE:
 Excessive alcohol and cigarette consumption increase the risk of serious health problems
such as High blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and digestive problems.

III. OBJECTIVES:

The family will be able to gain knowledge about the possible Health effects of excessive
alcoholism and cigarette smoking in the body. They will also know how to Identify Signs of
alcoholism and cigarette addiction.

IV. HEALTH TEACHING METHOD:


 Explanation & Discussion: The harmful effects of alcohol and cigarette in our
body.Combination of teaching strategy (explanation & discussion) is most beneficial for
learning to take place.

V. TARGET AUDIENCE:
 Gilay family and its significant others

VI. CONTENTS:

ALCOHOLISM :

 Alcoholism is the most severe form of alcohol abuse and involves the inability to manage
drinking habits. It is also commonly referred to as alcohol use disorder. Alcohol use disorder
is organized into three categories: mild, moderate and severe. Each category has various
symptoms and can cause harmful side effects. If left untreated, any type of alcohol abuse can
spiral out of control.

Health effects from alcoholism:

 High blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and digestive problems.
 Cancer of the breast, mouth, throat, esophagus, voice box, liver, colon, and rectum
 Weakening of the immune system, increasing the chances of getting sick.
 Learning and memory problems, including dementia and poor school performance.
 Mental health problems, including depression and anxiety.
 Social problems, including family problems, job-related problems, and unemployment.
 Alcohol use disorders, or alcohol dependence.
Signs of alcoholism include:

 Being unable to control alcohol consumption


 Craving alcohol when you’re not drinking
 Putting alcohol above personal responsibilities
 Feeling the need to keep drinking more
 Spending a substantial amount of money on alcohol
 Behaving differently after drinking

CIGARETTE SMOKING:
 Remains one of the most significant preventable causes of disease and premature death in
the western world and is a leading cause of cancer and death from cancer.

Health Effects from cigarette smoking:

 Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
Smoking also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the
immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis.
Signs of cigarette addiction:

 Cannot stop smoking or chewing, despite attempts to quit


 Has withdrawal symptoms when they try to quit (shaky hands, sweating, irritability, or rapid
heart rate)
 Must smoke after every meal or after long periods of time without using.

VII. HEALTH TEACHING EVALUATION:

The goal was met The discussion was well delivered and received by the family, After the
discussion the family and its significant others were able to understand and gain knowledge by
recalling the effects and signs of excessive alcohol and cigarette consumption.
