CONSTRUCTION
 It has a translucent ceramic arc tube constructed of polycrystalline
alumina (PCA).

 The arc tube which houses all of these materials.

 The arc tube is inserted into a heat resistant outer bulb.
 It has an ignitor that causes a pulse start that will arc through the
xenon gas inside of the lamp.

 In each end, back wounds and coated tungsten electrodes are

mounted.

 To seal the tube, a monolithic seal is used instead of a niobium

end cap

 HPS lamps have other materials mixed in with the sodium, and
also Mercury and Xenon that can be found in arc tube

 HPS bulbs typically emit 80% of their original rated
output at the end of life (around 24,000 hours).

EFFICACY
 Efficacies are between 70 to 120 lumens/watt ( including ballast), increasing with wattage.
 Electronic ballasts, said to be under development, could provide a small increase in system efficacy.

COLOR RENDERING
 Color rendering for High Pressure Sodium lights is slightly improved and emits a yellow to white light.
 The light from sodium sources is predominantly emitted in the longer wavelengths, between yellow
and red. Lamp color temperature in HPS lamps does not vary much.
 The standard high-pressure sodium lights have a 20-25 CRI.

COST OF LIGHTING
In terms of costing, low and high pressure sodium is much cheaper than LED light
depending on the specifications.
In terms of maintenance, both low-pressure and high-pressure sodium lamps are cheap
to buy and maintain.
That being said, although LPS and HPS bulbs last longer than most competitors, they are
still inferior to leads.
To achieve the comparable lifetime of an LED light, LPS or HPS lights would most likely
need to be purchased several times and the corresponding labor costs will need to be
charged.

EFFORTS TO IMPROVE EFFICIENCY

One main drawback to high pressure sodium lighting is that it has a yellow hue that simply
doesn't show you how things really look.
Because of HPS efficiency, this has been deemed adequate for many years.
But its low quality of the lighting means that when HPS lights are used, it may be difficult to
distinguish a car in a full parking lot, and security cameras or witnesses may not be able to
identify people if a crime has taken place.
There's also evidence that whiter lights can help with a driver's peripheral vision and stopping
time.
