Sawikain (Idiom, saying, or figurative speech)

Sayings is a way of speaking that use indirect speech so as not to use harsh words when criticizing, without hurting someone’s
feelings.

The Filipino language is rich with idiomatic expressions or idioms. These are expressions that have deep or meanings that are not
obvious. It uses the creativity of Filipinos to use words that when expressed would mean something else.

Some of its examples are:

• Dugo’t pawis: Blood and sweat – worked hard

• Hulog ng langit: Fell from the sky – blessing
• Hating magkapatid: Cut like siblings – share equally, do not take advantage
• Kabiyak na bao: coconut shell cut in half – cousin(s)
• Kabiyak ng puso: half-of-your-heart – spouse, husband or wife
