❖ INTRODUCTION.

As a consequence of the higher level of adoption of new

agricultural technology, India became self suffident in food
production.
At the some time due to heavy agro_inputes and Unscientific
agricultural practices the problem of land degradation soil degradation
in the form of soil become saline and waterlogged have emerged as
Major challenge of irrigated farming.
Improper land use and cropping pattern results in to degradation
of land cropping pattern simply means the proportion of area under
different crop at a point of a time where change in cropping pattern
refer to change in proportion of area under different crop at two
different time.

❖ TYPES OF IRRIGATION.

Surface irrigation. Water is distributed over and across land by

gravity, no mechanical pump involved :

• Localized irrigation.
• Drip irrigation.
• Sprinkler irrigation.
• Center pivot irrigation.
• Lateral move irrigation.
• Sub-irrigation.
• Manual irrigation.

Page 8
• LOCALISED IRRIGATION.

Localized irrigation is a system where the water is distributed under low

pressure through a piped network, in a pre-determined pattern, and applied water
as a small discharge to each plant or adjacent to it.

• DRIP IRRIGATION.

Drip irrigation involves placing tubing with emitters on the ground along side
the plants. The emitters slowly drip water into the soil at the root zone. Because
moisture levels are kept at an optimal range, plant productivity and quality
improve.

Page 9
• SPRINKLER IRRIGATION.
Sprinkler/spray irrigation is the method of applying water to a controlled
manner in that is similar to rainfall. The water is distributed through a network
that may consist of pumps, valves, pipes, and sprinklers. Irrigation sprinklers can
be used for residential, industrial, and agricultural usage.

• CANTER PIVOT IRRIGATION.

A canter-pivot irrigation system is a mechanized, pressurized water irrigation
method. The original and most used style of pivot irrigation applies water in a
circular pattern, pivoting around a central point in the middle of the field.

Page 10
• LATERAL MOVE IRRIGATION.

Lateral move systems can be an option to irrigate rectangular areas. Land

slope: Centre pivots can irrigate significantly undulating land. Some minor
earthmoving may be needed to connect depression areas and provide drainage for
runoff from rainfall.

• SUB IRRIGATION.

Subirrigation is the distribution of water to soil below the surface; it provides

moisture to crops by upward capillary action.

Page 11
• MANUAL IRRIGATION.

MANUAL. Manual irrigation is by far the most common form of irrigation as

anyone physically able to, can manually irrigate their crops. Manual irrigation is
you moving water from plant to plant.

❖ ADVANTAGES OF IRRIGATION.

Benefits of Irrigation Systems :

An automatic irrigation system will save you plenty of time that you in the past
would have spent watering your lawns, gardens and flowers.

➢ Saves Money.
➢ Saves Water.
➢ Improves Growth.

Page 12
❖ DISADVANTAGES OF IRRIGATION.

➢ Irrigation sometimes creates unrestrained excretion and percolation of water

throughout the whole passage.
➢ The overflowing irrigated water gives insects a place to make their habitat
which is harmful to surroundings giving rise to various diseases.
➢ As irrigated water helps to lessen the inversion, sometimes it turns the area
into a wet and sweaty surface. Immoderate irrigation clogs specific area by
raising the water.

❖ TYPES OF CROP.

Three types of crops :

1. Food crops.
2. Oil crops.
3. Industrial crops.

1. Food Crops.
Food crops consist of vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes (including dried beans),
spices, herbs, seeds and nuts, beverage plants such as tea and coffee, and so forth.
Carrots, cabbages are examples of vegetables which come under the category of
food crops.

Page 13
2. Oil Crops.
The major U.S. oilseed crops are soybeans, cottonseed, sunflower seed, canola,
rapeseed, and peanuts. Soybeans are the dominant oilseed in the United States,
accounting for about 90 percent of U.S. oilseed production.

3. Industrial crops.
Industrial crops are crops which are normally not sold directly for consumption
because they need to be industrially processed prior to final use.

Page 14
❖ CONCLUSION.

Appropriate irrigation scheduling should lead to improvements in

yields and incomes, result in water saving and, in turn, increase the
availability of water resources and should have a positive impact on the
quality of soils and groundwater.
