1. a) A cast iron flywheel running at average speed of 150 RPM is to store an energy 2400 N.m 10
in each revolution with the allowable fluctuation of 20% in the speed. If the diameter of
flywheel is limited to 1000 mm. Determine the rim dimensions and stresses in flywheel.
b) Describe the design procedure of a protected type flange coupling along with failure 10
equation of every component of coupling.
2. a) A journal bearing is to be designed for a centrifugal pump for the following data. 10
Load on the journal = 3.6 kN.
Diameter of the journal = 60 mm
Speed = 720 RPM
Atmospheric temp. of oil = 30ºC.
Operating temp. of oil = 70ºC
Absolute viscosity of oil at 70ºC = 20 MPa – S.
Give a systematic design of bearing.
b) Select suitable single row deep groove ball bearing with 50% reliability for the following 10
loading conditions. The bore diameter is 80 mm and life is 25000 hours.
3. a) A flat leather belt with Oak tanned belt drive used to transmit 7.5 kW power from motor 10
shaft running at 960 RPM to another shaft at 300 RPM. The centre distance between
shaft is limited to 1400 mm, suggest suitable cross of flat belt, and length of belt.
b) Select a suitable wire rope for a vertical mine hoist to lift a load of 50 kN. from a depth 10
of 300 meter. A rope speed of 500 m/min is to be attained in 10 seconds.

4. A line shaft requires 400 N. meter torque at 200 RPM and is driven by a V-Belt and chain 20
drive. An electric motor is running at 2000 RPM. The V-Belt drive is used in first stage
i.e. motor shaft to intermediate shaft and chain drive is used in second stage i.e. from
intermediate shaft to output shaft. Design both the drive and show the schematic
arrangement of the drive [Pulley design is not expected].
5. Design a spur gear drive used to transmit 21 KW power from an electric motor running at 20
1440 RPM to reciprocating pump shaft at approximately 500 RPM. Assume the material
for both Pinion and gear as SAE 1045 heat treated with So = 210MPa . Select 20º full
depth tooth profile. Design a layer gear blank.
6. Design a pair of straight teeth cast steel bevel gears to transmit from a shaft running at 270 20
RPM to another running at 90 RPM. Check the gears for continuous operations. Assume
steady load conditions. Select the material 0.20% carbon cast steel, heat treated with
So = 196MPa for both gear set. Also assume 20º full depth teeth profile.
7. Design a worm gear drive to transmit 25 kW from a shaft rotating at 1440 RPM to another 20
shaft rotating at 60 RPM. Select material for worm SAE 2320 steel and for worm fear
phosphor bronze SAE 65. Also provide the detailed dimension for worm and worm gear.
8. Design a cylinder for a four stroke water cooled diesel engine developing 5 kW at 1440 20
RPM. For the following assumptions.
i) The indicated mean effective pressure at the full load condition is 720 kN / m2 .
ii) Length of stroke = 1.1 time cylinder bore ‘D’.
iii) Maximum explosion pressure = 8 times mean effective pressure.
iv) = 1110−6 mm / º C
v) T = 120º C
