line in a shared tenement yard in port of Spain Trinidad. In the play,it is clearly indicated that Ephraim

Comedy
It is a play characterized by it's humourous or satirical tone and it's depiction of amusing people or
incidents in which the characters ultimately triumph over adversity.
In the play 'Ti-Jean and His Brothers'by Walcott Derek is an engaging and enjoyable play.
The comedy mainly comes into play the interaction between the Devil and each of the three
brothers. When Gross Jean is working for the Planter "the Devil". Deliberately gods call Gross Jean all
sorts of names except his own.Soon after the planter enters he says "That's right Gross Chien,Gross
Jean,Gross Jean,sorry".The Planter goes on calling Gross Jean ,Joe,to ma,to Grow Chien,to Charley,back
to Mac,then to Horace and then Francis,Joe again,Henry and ends with Benton then Merci near the end
of the scene."you're worth to me,Benton than fifty men.So you should smoke after all.And such a
pleasant disposition ,always smiling.Just like a skull. But remember Mervin,I would blike you work the
more I.......",the humour would be more apparent if one was actually visualizing the way it would be
acted on stage. The Planter would probably say the different the different names in an absent minded
fashion while Gross Jean gets more and more frustrated.Gros Jean would probably feel as if his identity
was Jeopardy.Identity is very important to Gross Jean, this is illustrated by the various references he
makes to his strength, something he considers integral to his identity.Unlike Gross Jean,Mi Jean is not
worried so much about the questioning if his identity as he is about the questioning of his learning.
