Music as most of us know it, for the most part contains a lot of emotion. Some music more and some
less of course, but this usually depends on a number of things, such as the music’s type, genre and or
purpose, etc. One thing is for sure though, all music has and serves a purpose. Regardless of if a
songs meaning and social relevance is understood and known or not, it is still existent. We as people
are inclined and have the tendency of interpreting things in a biased way; for whatever reason this
may be. This is harder to get away with, when something has a specific meaning and purpose of
course, such as a song. Analyzing and discovering the social relevance of an idea through a song is
probably the best, and most interesting way to do it. “Dust in the wind” by Kansas. This song is
actually one of my favorite songs in its given genre. It is very interesting and contains quite a
meaningful message within! Dust in the wind is a very emotion heavy and thought filled song. The
song really carries a sad feeling, not necessarily negative, but the emotion expressed is definitely not a
positive nor happy one. The purpose and or main topic of this song is to convey the idea; of generally
how unimportant we are in the world and ultimately in life itself. The message that this song is giving
out, doesn’t exclude anyone, it is directed to everyone, all human beings. In essence it is telling us
how insignificant we really are overall! Listening to this song is and can truly be an eye opener in a
way. It is truly amazing and even a bit mind blowing; the potential that “Dust in the wind” has on the
realization of the meaning of existence. A very deep, profound, and most definitely thought inducing
piece of music. The artists from the group “Kansas” express sadness when referring to the song as
well, which shows a different side to such an interesting concept. Again, the feeling carried and
brought upon by this song is quite melancholic! Another main point touched in “Dust in the wind” is
how brief our existence or “stay” is here on earth, especially when looking at it from such a
philosophical point of view! “We are just passing by”. It is also important to keep in mind that
nothing in this song was, or is intended for a specific audience, its message was/is meant to be
expressed generally! The forever unanswered question, that is sometimes known as the “ultimate
question” and still is mostly left up to our own criteria and imagination to answer. Commonly phrased
as “What is the meaning/purpose of our existence?” is still a mystery to most, if not all of us. In this
song we are metaphorically compared to “dust” and absolutely nothing more, “All we are is dust in
the wind”! Stirs up a weird feeling, since we like to think of ourselves as so much more valuable and
significant of course. Well this song does a great job at bursting our bubble and sadly humbling just
about anyone. The purpose of “Dust in the Wind” is to make us reflect on our brief existence on earth,
as well as in life. In a way it attempts to create a consciousness in us of our significance, as if it were
letting us know what to expect!
