INTELLIGENT BUILDING SYSTEM

Intelligent build design is the future of building industries. In recent years, the notion of intelligent
buildings (IBs) has become increasingly popular due to their potentials for deploying design
initiatives and emerging technologies towards maximized occupants’ comfort and well-being with
sustainable design. The term intelligent building was first used by United Technology Building
Systems Corporation in 1981 in the United States. About 2 years later, their efforts became a
reality, and the City Place Building in Hartford, Connecticut (United States) was named as
the world's first intelligent building. Since then, various definitions have been proposed for
IBs. The initial definitions only focused on the technological aspects without taking the user's
requirements into account.
However, the recent definitions also consider the occupants' interactions as well as their
relationship with the surrounding environment. Intelligent Building System (IBS) is a concept
that elaborate architectural design, interior design, mechanical and electrical in order to provide the
mobility and ease of control and access from any direction and any time. The system is highly related
to automation, where all the utility system in the building still can be operating without any people’s
intervention, even if there are no people inside of the building, the system will run in accordance
with the program that we have created.
Today, the ubiquitous presence of wireless connectivity, the need for energy efficiency, and an
increasing focus on comfort and safety features, as well as “Internet Of Things (IoT)
breakthrough in the 2000s, merged to advance the state-of-the-art in intelligent buildings.

However, various definitions, interpretations, and implications regarding the essence of IBs exist.
Various key performance indicators of IBs have been proposed in different contexts. This study
explores the notion of IBs and presents an analysis of their main constituents. Through a comparison
of these constituents in different contexts, this study aims to extract the common features of IBs
leading to an evolved definition which could be useful as a reference framework for design,
evaluation, and development of future IBs. Findings also scrutinize the long run benefits of IBs, while
demonstrating the constraints and challenges of the current international interpretations.
Intelligent buildings stay interconnected among different floors and other smart buildings in the
areas through cloud platforms, forming smart grid infrastructures. Smart cities depend on smart
grid infrastructure to coordinate between intelligent building, hospitals, educational institutions,
shopping centers, and homes, resulting in intelligently and efficiently run sustainable cities.

The progress of IB is summarized into three stages: To 1985: IB is a building automatically controlled
to function. From 1986 to 1991, IB is a building capable of responding to the changing needs. And,
from 1992 to present, IB is a building with features effectively satisfying the changing needs.
What is an intelligent building?

Intelligence is a way to make our life easy, comfortable, and delightful. There is an increased interest
from researchers in intelligence in buildings as equipment to fulfil the human needs. But,
unfortunately, this great interest is faced by a shortage in studies that cover the psychological and
social needs.

Buildings, in general, are designed to be used by people, and these users form the reason for the
existence of the buildings.

An intelligent building is one which integrates various systems to effectively manage resources in a
coordinated mode to maximize: technical performance; investment and operating cost savings;
flexibility. Also, An intelligent building is defined as a building with increased levels of
automation and integration, enabled by advanced electronic and information technologies.
