Although to an average person, the difference between a membrane and mechanical keyboard
may not hold much significance today. However, mechanical keyboards are much more valuable
to a typist, programmer, and gamer than any other computer user. The reasons are not far-
fetched, mechanical keyboards have an upper hand in certain areas as can be seen in the
differences between the two keyboards given below:
1. Durability: Mechanical keyboards have a longer life span than membrane keyboards.
Mechanical keyboards use individual mechanical switches This is contrary to a
membrane keyboard that uses a rubber cone. Mechanical keyboards are reported to have
a life span of at least 5o million presses, which is a standard to beat for membrane
keyboards which are probe to wear out sooner.
2. Modularity: The benefit of individual switches that comes with mechanical keyboards are
not limited to durability alone but also extends to modularity. The individual switches
allow the user to customize keyboard to their taste. This is could be of great benefit to
programmers and typist who can get a good feeling of satisfaction that comes with
adjusting and customizing the size, switches, and layout of the keyboard.
3. Repairability: Since, each key has its own individual switch, mechanical keyboards are
easily repaired or replaced in the event that any of the keys get damaged. On the other
hand, membrane keyboards cannot be repaired because of the low quality of the materials
used to design them.
4. Input latency: In relation to performance, mechanical keyboard is more quickly registered
than membrane keyboards because of their low input latency.
5. Cost: Membrane keyboards are not without their own benefits. Generally, they are
cheaper than mechanical keyboards which makes them much more cist effective than the
mechanical keyboards which is a good option for people who are on a tight budget.
