1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. Building information modeling (BIM)

1.3. Brief history of Revit
- Charles River Software was founded in October 31, 1997 by Leonid Raiz and Irwin
Jungreis, key developers of Parametric Technology's Pro/Engineer software for
mechanical design.
- Raiz and Jungreis hired several software developers and architects and began
developing Revit in C++ on the Microsoft Windows platform.
- In 1999 they hired Dave Lemont as CEO and recruited board members Jon Hirschtick,
founder of SolidWorks, and Arol Wolford, founder of CMD group.
- Revit was intended to allow architects and other building professionals to design and
document a building by creating a parametric three dimensional model that included
both the geometry and non-geometric design and construction information, what
later become known as Building information modeling or BIM.
- The company was renamed Revit Technology Corporation in January, 2000, and Revit
version 1.0 was released on April 5, 2000. The software progressed rapidly, with
version 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 4.0, and 4.1 released in August, 2000; October, 2000; February,
2001; June, 2001; November, 2001; and January, 2002, respectively
- Autodesk (the developers of AutoCAD) purchased the Revit Technology Corporation
for US$133 million in 2002. The purchase allowed more research, development and
improvement of the software.
- Autodesk has released several versions of Revit since 2004.
- In 2005 Revit Structure was introduced, then in 2006 Revit MEP.
- After the 2006 release Revit Building was renamed Revit Architecture.
- In 2012 Revit LT released a light version of Revit with a number of features such as
rendering and multi user environments crippled.
- Since purchasing Revit, Autodesk has developed three versions of Revit for the varying
building design disciplines:
 Revit Architecture, for architects and building designers (formerly Revit Building).
 Revit Structure for structural engineers and designers.
 Revit MEP for mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineers.
- Revit One Box was introduced as part of the 2013 product release. It includes all three
flavors of Revit in one installation and is part of the Building Design Suite Premium and
Ultimate editions.

‫وﻣﻜﻮﻧﺎ ﺎ ﰲ ﳕﻮذج ﺛﻼﺛﻲ اﻷﺑﻌﺎد‪ ،‬ﻣﻊ إﻣﻜﺎﻧﻴﺔ ﲢﻮﻳﻠﻪ ﻟﻨﻤﻮذج ﺛﻨﺎﺋﻲ اﻷﺑﻌﺎد‪ .‬واﳊﺼﻮل ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﻌﻠﻮﻣﺎت اﳌﺒﲎ ﺑﻨﺎء ﻋﻠﻰ ﻗﺎﻋﺪة اﻟﺒﻴﺎﻧﺎت‬
‫اﳌﺪﺧﻠﺔ ﻟﻠﻨﻤﻮذج‪ .‬اﻟﺮﻳﻔﻴﺖ ﻫﻮ ﳕﺬﺟﺔ اﳌﺒﺎﱐ وﻣﻌﻠﻮﻣﺎ ﺎ )‪ ،(BIM 4D‬وﻟﻪ أدوات ﻗﺎدرة ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﺘﺨﻄﻴﻂ‪ ،‬وﺗﺘﺒﻊ ﳐﺘﻠﻒ ﻣﺮاﺣﻞ دورة‬
‫اﳌﺸﺮوع أو اﳌﺒﲎ‪ ،‬ﺑﺪءاً ﻣﻦ اﳌﻔﻬﻮم اﻷوﱄ ﻟﻠﺒﻨﺎء إﱃ ﻣﻔﺎﻫﻴﻢ اﳍﺪم ﻓﻴﻤﺎ ﺑﻌﺪ‪.‬‬
‫‪ ‬ﻣﺎ ﻳﻤﻜﻦ أن ﻳﻔﻌﻠﻪ اﻟﺮﻳﻔﻴﺖ‬

2.1. Before Starting REVIT
Revit should know which template you are using such as (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing
…etc.), so if you draw pipe line in plumbing template for example the program automatically
put the elbows to the corners, tees to intersections, crosses to crosses, etc.

Let's start new project by using mechanical metric template
1. In Projects category click New.

2. In New Project window click Browse button.
3. In Choose Template window Double-Click the templates units folder (ex. US Metric).
4. Click the template you want (ex. Mechanical-Default-Metric.rte).
5. Click Open button.
6. In New Project window click Ok.

How to locate your template?
You aren't have to locate your template every time you start a new project. Also Revit have a

- Draw whatever you want in your new project and let your colleagues draw any other
like you.
- Tell your colleagues to save his file at anywhere, upload it on a sharing site or cloud,
or on any data transfer device.
- Copy your colleagues file to your PC or download it from website or cloud.

The linked file Path Type may be:
Relative: if the file is an the same location of the project file so you can't miss the link
if you change the folder contains your files

Absolute: if the file is in the absolute path so any change in the path will miss your link.

- It looks like the idea that several users are working in the same file at the same time
but really not on the specific file but rather in a copy of this file that communicates the
actions and model changes of each user back to the central file. A copy of a central file
is called a local file.

- Create a new project as we explained before.

‫ﻗﻢ ﺑﻌﻤﻞ ﻣﺸﺮوع ﺟﺪﻳﺪ ﻛﻤﺎ ﺷﺮﺣﻨﺎ ﻣﻦ ﻗﺒﻞ‬
- Revit knows that you are working on share working mode only when you create the
default worksets
‫ اﻻﻓﺘﺮاﺿﻴﻪ‬worksets ‫ إذا ﻗﻤﺖ ﻓﻘﻂ ﺑﻌﻤﻞ ال‬work sharing ‫ﻳﻌﻠﻢ اﻟﺮﻳﻔﻴﺖ أﻧﻚ ﺳﺘﻌﻤﻞ ﻓﻲ ﻣﻮد‬
- Worksets like labels you create to make you the owner of this work and no one can
modify or edit it until you give him a permission.

1. From collaborate panel click Worksets icon or you will find the worksets icon
behind the statue bar
2. Revit will ask you to create two new worksets called Shared Levels and Grids and
Workset1. Click Ok button.
Note that your user name is under the owner Colum for both worksets and also the Editable
colum is Yes for both too.

Creating Local file
- It is created from central file to begin your own work and coordinate it with others work
where you can see others work without editing it (only if they gave you a permission).
1. Click Open from Projects category

2. Go to your central file path on the network
3. Make sure that Create New Local checkbox is checked
4. Click Open button
- You will find the local file title is changed to Project name_ your user name.rvt
- Also the save icon and synchronize icon are activated

There is a default place Revit choose to locate your local file in your C drive but this is not
safe
So you have to change this location to a safe place in your computer (ex. I choose my D drive
to Revit Training folder)

next time
- It is highly recommended that you start to create a new local file from central to
give you more back-ups so you have 200 back up for every work time otherwise

Choosing (Append timestamp to existing filename) creates a new local file with the same
name for your work now and saved other one with the same name added by the last
modification date

It is a combination between linked file and central file
If there is a central file, and any local file, created from it, linked his file with an .rvt file
then synchronize it with central, all other local files, created from it, will also linked with
that file.

- Worksets like labels that enables you to be owner to the following work and no one can
modify or edit it until you gave him a permission
- You can own unlimited number of worksets

- The main difference between linking and importing CAD file is the space loaded into

It is very important to start building your model from the basic element of the project and
still monitoring any change of this basics to rebuild your design this is the importance of
Copy/Monitor command and this basics may be Grids, Levels, Scope box and Base Point

Levels
For example; Architecture Revit file will be linked to a mechanical central file to start
building the mechanical elements. The basic elements we start from will be Levels so we
will copy and monitor the levels of the arch revit file

2. Click the building view from east or west side from project browser to view the levels
of the building
3. From Collaborate panel> click Copy/Monitor icon> choose Select link as the file is
linked from another file not a model in our project> Click on the file drawing shown by
the blue square

4. Click Copy icon > check Multiple> Click Ctrl while selecting multiple levels> click all
levels you want to copy and start from> Click Finish button.
Note: Revit creates a default two levels (Level 1 and Level 2) so you can't copy them as they
are already copied to your project by default

- Implementing your project before start creating your model will be very useful to
organize your project for fast creating and implementing errors
