Topic: If I could be someone else, I would be...

If I could be someone else, I would be Abdul Sattar Edhi. Edhi has left an indelible mark in
my life and has continually proved himself to be worth of respect and admiration. Edhi, born
in pre-partition India in 1928, migrated to Pakistan in 1947. His mother became paralyzed
and mentally ill when he was just eleven and later passed away when he was nineteen.
Despite these humble beginnings, he has conquered all barriers and helped hundreds of
thousands of people around the world for over 65 years. Although he was nearly broke, he
immediately began helping others and was devoted to assisting the poor. He established the
Edhi Foundation in 1951. He was known as ‘angel of mercy’ and ‘mother Teressa of
Pakistan’ because of his generosity and selflessness. Even if he was threatened, attacked,
robbed, given death threats and even had him and his staff at a gunpoint, he did not lose hope
or give up, he stayed positive and served people selflessly till his death. To demonstrate why
would I like to be him, here below are some achievements that have fuelled my desire to be
like him.

Edhi was known for spending his life working to help others. He referred to all those in need
as equal and would treat them as such. Abdul Sattar Edhi was not only a person, but he was
an extraordinary human who exemplified society's desirable traits. Edhi stated, "People have
become educated, but they haven't been human. They have forgotten their humanity." Edhi
embodied humanity through his selfless actions toward society's most vulnerable members.
He established the Edhi foundation in 1951. The Edhi Foundation, a humanitarian
organization located in Karachi, Pakistan, fights social ailments by helping the needy. It
provides nursing homes, orphanages, soup kitchens, maternity wards, women's shelters,
rehabilitation centers, and the world's largest voluntary ambulance service. Despite the
challenges that arose from the opposition of the religious community, Edhi demonstrated
selfless and devoted characteristics at every opportunity. This shows how much humanity he
has in him and the fact that he raised 20,000 children excluding his own four is very heroic.
Edhi generously contributed many important fundamentals to the success of his foundation. I
hope that one day I will also have a pure and generous heart like Edhi. I hope I can serve my
home country and all people around the world who are in need. I hope to be another
individual standing up for humanity and stop racism.

After the Pakistani leaders gave him death threats he was attacked and robbed. Nearly a
million dollars and eleven pounds of gold and jewellery were stolen. Although years worth of
money that Edhi struggled to raise was stolen, he remained positive and persistent. He
responded to the robbery: 'No matter how bad the situation here becomes; I won't give up. I
will not lose hope.' Exemplifying strong attributes, Ehdi managed to stay dedicated,
continuing his work and consistently said how nothing would stop him but his own death.
The 'Angel of Mercy' even preserved through the resistance of his own religious leaders. This
states that he was a very positive man with a unique sense to change the world to make it a
safer and livelier place for all. Personally, I lose hope very easily and staying strong after
constant loss is hard, Edhi is a big inspiration and motivation to me. He made me realize that
life does not stop at any point, u have to keep moving and never lose hope. I wish that I can
be as down to earth and positive as he has, and help people all around the world.
Sadly, this human being who selflessly cared for every human without any discrimination
passed away on the 8th of July, 2016. The entire country of Pakistan witnessed his funeral,
and it was considered a very dark day for the people who considered him a father.

In the end, Edhi heroically helped people he didn't even know by begging for money
personally on their behalf throughout the year. He was seen caring for orphans, washing and
burying the deceased, raising money globally, and driving ambulances as part of his work.
Ehdi is a role model in the community for his selfless actions and generosity. He often
encourages others to volunteer and has inspired volunteers worldwide to pursue their
potential and leadership skills. As the Head of Operations at Safe Hands for Children, Ehdi
has become an essential part of a network that provides direct support to children in need.
Edhi’s experiences and strong words have given me strength to endure a happy and peaceful
life.

"In the decade since, Edhi ambulances have become a symbol of friendship and welcome
compassion throughout Pakistan". Ehdi starting from nothing, had created a symbol of
universal peace and safety that inspires the less fortunate in Pakistan to pursue their passions.
Not only has Edhi spread his ways through the regions of Pakistan but he has also set an
example for all types of people around the world. Edhi's actions spoke louder than his words
as he presented mankind to an approach of being globally accepting and understanding to
others situations, sacrificing for the benefit of others, as well as staying devoted to a cause.
Through his foundation, Edhi has spread joy throughout the hearts of innocent orphans, and
internationally. Abdul Sattar Edhi reminds us not to get caught up in the insignificant
materialistic aspects of life, and to emphasize our human characteristics for the interest of
mankind. I would like to go through the same experiences as he did. Helping thousands of
people and watching their gratitude filled eyes and smiling faces. Educating and raising
orphans so they can live a better life ahead. All of his attributes and characteristics have
deeply touched many hearts and have inspired many individuals to never lose hope and keep
life simple and humble. He has taught me many lessons and I am very grateful for that. He
will continue to stay alive in our hearts and he will forever be my role model. He is the hero
and pride of Pakistan.

All the aforementioned characteristics and achievements by this man has made me admire
him more They are just the tip of an iceberg but I would like to be him and experience how
greatness feels like first-hand. His greatness has demanded respect and admiration and I
would like to share in that spotlight. However, since this is impossible, I try to replicate his
character in my life. It has helped me to shatter many barriers and given me the strength to
strive relentlessly towards my goals. He has demonstrated to me that though perfection is
impossible, you can come very close to it.
