3.1 Fractions

3.2 Equivalent fractions

Part 1
3.3 Mixed numbers

3.4 Proper fractions and Improper fractions

3.5 Addition and Subtraction of fractions

3.6 Multiplications and Division of fractions Part 2

3.7 Combined operations

3.1 Fractions

- when a unit of whole quantity is divided into equal parts , we call those parts
fractions of unit.

- fractions are numbers that represent one or more equally divided parts of a
whole

Writing fractions
𝑎
-fractions are written in the form of in which a is the numerator and b is
𝑏
denominator

Example:

5
is five over eight in words
8

3.2 Equivalent fractions

-fractions that represent the same value although they have different
numerators and denominators

Example:
1 2 4
= =
2 4 8

- To find the equivalent fraction, multiply or divide both numerator and

denominator by a same number

Example 1:
5 𝑥 25
= =
7 21 𝑦

Determine the values of x and y

Determining equivalent fractions

To determine whether two fractions are equivalent:

a. Change both fractions into same denominator and then compare the
numerator

b. If numerators are same , then these two fractions are equivalent

c. If numerators are different, then these two fractions are not equivalent

Example 2

Are the following fractions equivalent?

1 5 3 10
a. , 25 b. , 16
5 8
Comparing the values of two fractions

How do we compare two fractions?

a. If both fractions have a common denominator :

Compare the value of numerators, the fraction with larger numerator has
larger value

4 2
>
5 5

b. If both fractions have a common numerator:

Compare the value of denominators. The fraction with smaller denominator

has a larger value

2 2
>
7 9
c. If both fraction have different numerators and denominators:

Change both of the fractions into their equivalent fractions with same
denominator and then compare the numerator

3 1
>
5 4

Arranging fractions in order

Step 1: Change each fractions into its respective equivalent fraction with a
common denominator

Step 2: Arrange the fractions in ascending or descending order according tp

numerators
Example 3
1 8 5
Arrange , 9, 6 in ascending order
2

Simplifying fractions into lowest term

-divide the numerator and denominator with their highest common multiple

Example 4
24
Simplify to its lowest term
42

3.3 Mixed numbers

- a mixed number consist of a whole number and a fraction

Example
1 2
3 ,4
3 5

- Can also be represented in a diagram

,
3.4 Proper fractions and improper fractions

Recognizing proper fractions and improper fractions

Proper fractions

-fractions in which numerator (top) is less than denominator (bottom)

- proper fraction is less than 1

Example
2 6 9
, ,
3 7 11

Improper fractions

- Fractions in which numerator is equal to or greater than denominator

- Improper fraction is equal to or greater than denominator

8 11 25
, ,
8 7 11

Example 5

From these fractions

3 5 11 9 4 25
, , , , ,
7 9 2 8 7 11
a. proper fractions

b. improper fractions

Changing mixed numbers into improper fractions

Step 1: Retain the denominator

Step 2: Multiply the whole number with the denominator

Step 3: Add the product of the denominator and the whole number to the
numerator

Example 6
2
Write 13 as an improper fraction?
3

Changing improper fractions into mixed numbers

Step 1: Divide the numerator with the denominator

Step 2: Retain the denominator

Step 3: The quotient becomes the whole numbers

Step 4: The remainder becomes the numerator

Example 7

Convert the following improper fractions into mixed numbers

19 30
a. b.
5 6
