What do you know about Dance as a Competition? Did you know that
knowing and understanding the nature of a specific dance and mastering
several of its techniques are just the first few steps in learning the dance
as a whole? Dance competitions are where dancers show off and compare
their skills with other dancers. Cheer dance is relatively new in the field of
sports and dance as it has emerged during the early 1990s as part of the
cheerleading events. To better understand the topic read your textbook on
pages 53-57 then answer the following questions.

1. What is cheer dance? And where did it come from?

Several dance genres such as cheer dance, ballroom dance,

street dance, and hip-hop dance are done not just for
entertainment but for competition as well. Dance sport is a
combination of art and sport. It was called competitive ballroom
dancing in the past, this goes with partners male and lady
competing against other partners dancing on the floor at one time.
While street dance is one of the newest dance genres in the 20th
century that immensely attracts the new generation particularly
the youth.
To fully understand Dance sport and Street dance you will be
having a scaffold called “Examining Dance sport and Street dance
Performance.” For this scaffold, you have to watch a video or clip
of a dance sport and street dance competition from the internet.

What do you know about Dance-related Injuries? Did you know according
to Ojofeitimi and colleagues that the rate of injury among hip-hop dancers
were comparable to gymnasts but higher than other dance forms. They also
reported that breakdancers have a higher injury risk than poppers, lockers,
and new school dancers. For this module, we will discuss Dance-related
injuries. In terms of dancing you may also have a higher risk of getting
injured.

Similar to athletes, dancers are highly motivated to perform well. They push
their body to the limit and spend hours in technique training and mastering
a choreography. On the other hand, dancers place great value on their
physique that they often do not get proper nourishment, a habit that could
impede their recovery. These are the factors that could lead dancers to
injury.
Now, to further understand Dance-related Injury, read pages 91-99 of your textbook. After reading,
answer the table and write down the Proper Etiquette and safety in using facilities and equipment.

Researchers tried to identify the factors that influence injury risk. Several factors have been found to be
associated with these injuries such as poor technique, poorly designed training program, excessive
duration and intensity, and inaappropriate equipment. To better understand the topic, answer the
following questions below.

1. Do you think dancers are at a higher risk for injury as compared to other athletes? Why?

3. Suggest two ways on how can a dancer prevent such injuries.
