As you have learned in the 1st Quarter modules , Short stories must achieve
a lot of story in only a few words. There are four elements that really make a
story stand out: character, plot, setting, and tension. Balancing these
elements is the first step to making your short story amazing.

What Is Setting?
 The setting of a piece of literature is the time and place in which the story takes
place.
 The setting provides the backdrop to the story and helps create mood.
ELEMENTS OF SETTING
 Elements of setting may include culture, historical period, geography, and hour.
Along with the plot, character, theme, and style, setting is considered one of the
fundamental components of fiction.

ELEMENTS OF SETTING
 Elements of setting may include culture, historical period, geography, and hour.
Along with the plot, character, theme, and style, setting is considered one of the
fundamental components of fiction.

TWO TYPES OF SETTING:
 Integral Setting: the setting is fully described in both time and place, usually found
in historical fiction.
 Backdrop Setting:

GENERALIZATION:
 Setting is the context in which a story occurs. Just as a photograph has

a foreground and a background, so does a story.
 The main characters and their actions form the foreground. The time and
place of the events, and the social environment surrounding them, form
the background. People exist in a particular time and place. Where your
characters live may contribute to their personalities, values, attitudes,
and even their problems. Your story’s setting can have great impact on
the people in your story, how they react, and what they do.
 An awareness of how setting influences the plot and characters in

a story is important to help learners understand and respond to literary
texts. When a learner considers a story's setting, he or she gains insight
into the underlying foundation or backdrop of a story thus giving deeper
meaning to the whole story.
