Let’s Understand
After you have written your speech, your next step is to deliver your well-
written informative and persuasive speech. Speech is a spoken expression of
ideas, opinions, etc., that is made by someone who is speaking in front of a group of
people. (Merriam-Webster 2017). Good delivery is a very important aspect of public
speaking. It includes how well you use your voice and non- verbal communication or
body language.

VOCAL ASPECTS OF SPEECH DELIVERY

Vocal delivery includes components of speech delivery that relate to your voice.
These include rate, volume, pitch, articulation, pronunciation, and fluency. Your voice
is important to consider when delivering your speech for two main reasons. First, vocal
delivery can help you engage and interest the audience. Second, vocal delivery helps
ensure that your ideas are communicated clearly. A speech is best delivered with clear
and correct articulation and well – enunciated words in a properly modulated voice.

1
1. ARTICULATION -refers to the production of individual sounds. American
English sounds consists of Vowels and Consonants. There are fourteen vowels
in the American English. Try to pronounce the words correctly. Listen to your
voice and note how the underlined sounds are produced.
Examples : could – cooed, fill- feel- fell -fail, hat- hut- hot, add – odd,
ball- bowl , hurt – heart
Examples of consonants:
tree – three, then – den , mass, mash, raid – writhe , ports- porch

The speaker must make sure that he/ she articulates and enunciates the words
properly for better and meaningful understanding and for clearer and more
accurate delivery.

2. STRESS
The relative prominence brought about by the intensity of utterance.

1. I am taking HUMMS track. (no other)
2. I am taking HUMMS track. (not any other track)
3. I am taking HUMMS track. ( verb – meaning ‘studying)

3.INTONATION is the rise and fall of the voice when speaking.

1. I am a senior high school student. ( 2 – 3 – 1)
2. Are you taking ABM track? ( 2 – 3 – 3)

4. JUNCTURE refers to the pauses in speech. / for short pause and // for terminal.
1. Promises / also build trust. //
2. Keeping your word / is a sign/of good character.//
3. Let’s try / to keep our promises/ as much as possible. //

MODULATION is achieved by changing the tone or pitch of your voice to convey

various nuances of meaning when you speak. For instance, you modulate your voice
when you say “YES” to answer a question and you modulate it differently when you
use it to ask your friend what she or he wants.

2
Components of Voice Modulation

1.Inflection is the use of variety in pitch or frequency of voice. Different words will
have higher or lower inflection than others’ such as the rising of pitch at the end
of a question and a moderate level of pitch when speaking normally.

2.Volume or loudness is a perception of energy used in voice production. The

speaker must make sure that his/ her voice is heard by the last person at the back.
Speakers should avoid verbal fillers like uh, ah, okay, know, um. Your voice should
sound as animated as when you converse with your friend. Ideally, the speaker
should speak in a well – modulated voice.

3. Rate or speed refers to how fast or how slowly one says the lines. This may vary
in accordance to the mood or thoughts the speaker is conveying.
4. Pitch is ”the relative highness or lowness of a tone” as perceived by the ear,
which depends on the number or variations per second produced by the vocal
cords.
5. Duration depends upon the type of speech, occasion, audience, and the context
in which the speaker speaks.
