Experiment # 3

Kinematics Viscosity
Objective:
 To determine the kinematic viscosity of the sample.
 To study the effect of temperature on the kinematic viscosity of the given liquid.
 To determine the percentage composition of the provided sample.
 To compare the experimental values and theoretical values.

Kinematic Viscosity:
Kinematic viscosity is a measure of a fluid's internal resistance to flow under
gravitational forces. It is determined by measuring the time in seconds, required for a fixed
volume of fluid to flow a known distance by gravity through a capillary within a calibrated
viscometer at a closely controlled temperature.

Procedure:
1. Clean the viscometer with the distilled water and given liquid
2. Maintain the desired temperature in the thermostat say 40 degree C.
3. Fill preferably using paper with the given liquid and place in the thermostat fill one inch
below from the top.
4. Allow the heavy steady state.
5. Suck the liquid and try to rise the liquid in the capillary rice the liquid up to the upper
mark present on the capillary lamp of the viscometer place thumb on the open end of the
capillary so that the rise and liquid does not fall.
6. Allow the liquid to flow from the upper marked down to the lower mark by removing
thumb and note the time required for the liquid to flow between these two points.
7. Change the temperature of thermostat and do same.
8. Take 5 to 6 readings for given liquid as well as for distilled water.
9. Prepare different sample of water and alcohol mixture that is samples of different
composition of water and alcohol.
10. At room temperature do the same procedure as done above with all the samples.
11. Samples can be prepared as.

Observations and Calculations:

Room temp=29 C

Effect of temperature on viscosity:

No.of observations Temperature Efflux time for alcohol Efflux time for water
C ta tw
1 29 8.35 5.31
2 40 6.15 4.87
3 50 4.48 3.95
4 60 5.38 3.89

For percentage age composition of unknown sample:

No. of Observations Composition of alcohol Composition of water% Efflux Time (s)
%
1 0 100 5.31
2 20 80 13.47
3 30 70 13.68
4 50 50 14.16
5 70 30 17.14

Conclusion:
As the temperature of the given sample of alcohol and water increase the efflux time for
both samples decrease which shows that the viscosity of liquid decrease with the increase in
temperature.
