Chapter 9/Tutorial 9 CHM 420

1. Define Charles’s Law.

2. State two conditions under which a gas deviates from its ideal behaviour.

3. Methane, CH4 is the main component of natural gas and used primarily as fuel. In a mixture of
gases CH4 and O2 gases, the partial pressure of CH4 and O2 are 0.570 atm and 0.921 atm,
respectively.

i) Calculate the mole fraction of each gas in the mixture.

ii) Determine the total number moles of gases if the mixture occupies a volume of 10.5 L at 85 °C.

4. Explain briefly which gas between O2 and CH4 will travel faster at 400 K.

5. Potassium chlorate decomposes to give potassium chloride and oxygen gas.

2KClO3(s) ® 2KCl(s) + 3O2(g)

Determine the mass of KClO3 that must be decomposed to produce 80 L of oxygen gas at 120°C
and 666.8 torr.

6. The partial pressure of methane gas is 0.285 atm and that of oxygen gas is 0.45 atm in a mixture
of the two gases.

i) Determine the mole fraction of each gas in the mixture.

ii) Assuming ideal behaviour, calculate the density (in g/L) of methane gas at STP.
iii) Comment on the average speed and kinetic energy of methane and oxygen at 30oC.

7. A sample of zinc metal reacts completely with an excess of hydrochloric acid.

Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) ® ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)

The hydrogen gas produced is collected over water at 25oC. The volume of the gas is 7.80 L and
the pressure is 0.98 atm. (Vapour pressure of water at 25oC is 23.8 mmHg).

i) Write the pressure of hydrogen gas in unit mmHg.

ii) Calculate the partial pressure of hydrogen gas.
iii) Calculate the density and weight of the hydrogen gas produced.
iv) Determine the amount of zinc metal consumed (in gram) in the reaction.
v) Explain what happen to the pressure of H2 produced upon temperature increment to 40oC after
the reaction begins.

8. Exactly 8.00 g of O2 and 2.00 g of He was placed in a 5.00 L tank at 298 K.

i) Find the partial pressure for each gas in kPa.

ii) Calculate the total pressure of the mixture.
iii) Calculate the mole fraction for each gas.

9. Explain with examples, what Graham’s observations suggest about the relative speed of molecules
that have different molecular weights.

10. A 15.0 L vessel containing 5.65 g of nitrogen is connected by a valve to a 6.0 L vessel containing
5.00 g of oxygen. The valve is opened and the gases and are allowed to mix at 27 oC.

i) Define partial pressure.

ii) Determine the partial pressure of each gas.
iii) Calculate the total pressure in the vessel.

11. Consider a hydrogen molecule at 300 K:

i) Calculate the root mean square speed for the hydrogen molecule.
ii) Comment on the ratio of average molecular kinetic energy of UF6 molecule to that of hydrogen
at 300 K.

12. Assuming that a gas sample occupies a 350.0 mL container at 546 mm Hg, determine the volume
of the gas at 652 mm Hg at the same temperature. Sketch a labelled graph showing the
relationship for the aforementioned condition.

13. A birthday party balloon is filled with 0.045 g of helium gas. If the balloon takes up 750.0 mL of
space and has a pressure of 325 torr, calculate the temperature inside the balloon.

14. If it takes 2.61 minutes for 2.45 mL of an unknown gas to effuse through a porous cup, and 1.25
minutes for 2.45 mL of CH4 at the same temperature and pressure, deduce the approximate molar
mass (g/mol) of the unknown gas.

15. An inflated helium balloon with a volume of 0.55 L at sea level (1.0 atm) is allowed to rise to a
height of 6.5 km, where the pressure is about 0.40 atm. Assuming that the temperature remains
constant, what is the final volume of the balloon?

Calculate its final pressure (in atm).

17. A small bubble rises from the bottom of a lake, where the temperature and pressure are 8 oC and
6.4 atm, to the water’s surface, where the temperature is 25 oC and the pressure is 1.0 atm.
