Explanation:
This experiment consists of using a mason jar, a jug of water, shaving cream, and blue
food coloring. To get the experiment set up we first will need to fill up the mason jar with water
and then add in the shaving cream (clouds) on the top of the jar. To see the “rain” we will need
to put small drops of the blue food coloring overtop of the shaving cream. The food coloring
will leak through the cream and fall through the water making it look like rain. The rain is
created when the weight of the food coloring is too heavy for the shaving cream and then it
falls through it.

Five Science Vocabulary Words (2.5 marks)

1. Rain
2. Water
3. Blue
4. Cloud
5. Weather
Five Purposeful Questions (2.5 marks)
1. What do you think will happen if we add the blue food colouring?
2. How does the rain move as it falls through the clouds?
3. Do we think this experiment would work the same way if we used a different colour of food
colouring?
4. What makes you think that?
5.What changes did you observe during the experiment?
Two Successes of Activity (2 mark)
1. Quick and easy to set up and clean up. This ensures kids are not left impatiently waiting
during these transitional periods.
2. The experiment went as planned; as soon as the food colouring hit the shaving cream,
droplets of “rain” fell from the shaving cream into the water.
Two Challenges of Activity (2 marks)
1. The experiment works well in small groups of children, however, in a large group there are
not enough materials for every child to get a chance to participate and explore.
2. “Rain” is only created when enough food colouring is dropped, as the weight must be heavy
enough to produce droplets. If this does not happen, “rain” does not occur.
