A.INTRODUCTION
In general, a best practice is a way of doing something that is shown to
generate the desired results. Background information on the best
practices and the reason for the project's
In terms of mathematics instruction, we typically think of a best implementation.
practice as a teaching strategy or lesson structure that promotes a
deep student understanding of mathematics.

An alarming low performance of students in Mathematics is very much

evident as identified by localized and contextualized Numeracy Tests
provided by the Regional Office during the school year 2021-2022.

With this result, Jose Panganiban National High School also -Basis of the concept behind the project

numeracy skills of Grade 7 and Grade 8 learners in Mathematics
*Result of Project Counts
Due to the difficulties met by some students in learning the different
competencies in Math as identified in Project COUNTS and to lessen
the number of students at risk of dropping out, the approved project
proposal of Ms. Marife S. Osorio – the MBTS (Math Buddy Tutorial
System) continue in the current school year to improve the
performance level of all learners in Mathematics.
Most of the learners in every section have low performance in
mathematics and very few can adapt and achieve the learning goal
during the one-hour teaching-learning process due to the impact of the
COVID-19 Pandemic.
Discussion of the problem/s addressed
Sharing of teaching strategies and techniques, collaboration, and
cooperation among all teachers and with the participation of other
stakeholders were done to address the problems that occurred during
the pandemic until the current school year.
Project COUNTS
The general objective of Project Counts is to increase the percentage
of learners performing numeracy skills by 80%, specifically:
1. Identifies the level of numeracy skills.
2. Improve numeracy skills of G7 learners with at least 5%
increase over the pre-test.
3. Promote greater awareness and positive attitude towards
Mathematics among Grade 7 learners.
4. Provide support to parents in facilitating mathematics
exercises for the enhancement of basic skills in Mathematics Specific objectives and significance of the
5. Strengthen partnerships among teachers, learners, parents, project
and alumni

M-BTS
The general objective of the Math-Buddy Tutorial System (M-BTS) is to
improve the school numeracy performance by 5% specifically:
a) identify students who needed major support.
b) provide intervention to improve the performance of learners in the
class.
c) apply the knowledge they learned in Mathematics by helping others
d) develop collaboration among students.

B.PRESENTATION Description of the best practices

Project COUNTS is composed of activities that will test and track

learners’ level of numeracy specifically on the four fundamental
operations in Mathematics which are the basic foundation in
understanding the language of mathematics in its vast applications.
Acquiring such skills requires so much attention since early
childhood encounters in basic foundation in numeracy is crucial and
whatever mathematical skills and competencies they’ve learned will be
carried out until they reach maturity. After almost two years of a non-
contact approach in Philippine education not certain about the
outcomes of its advocacy of providing Filipino learners skills in
language, literacy, and numeracy, and to keep the system on track
collaboration among teachers, parents and stakeholders must be
strengthened.
1. M-BTS is a tutorial program to improve the numeracy skills of
the identified students.
2. The M-BTS team will identify possible volunteer tutors and
orient them to the project.
3. The volunteer tutors will be called “Math Buddy”
4. Math Buddy may be a Math Club Officer, classmate,
schoolmate, teacher, family, or friend.
5. The student’s Math Buddies will be given a certificate of
recognition and an additional point for their class performance
in Mathematics subject.
6. The M-BTS team will provide the materials for the review
sessions
7. The M-BTS team will identify the learners who will attend the
review sessions
8. The M-BTS team will identify the schedule of the students with
the help of the Math teachers.
9. The M-BTS team will monitor the progress of the students.

These projects include all Mathematics teachers, Math Club Officers,

Persons involved
Learners, family, and other stakeholders.

The target beneficiaries of these projects are Grade 7 and Grade 8

Target beneficiaries
learners who were identified with low performance in Mathematics.

The said projects will be continuously implemented and are dependent

D.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The narration of the outcomes and outputs

of the activities
Project counts is one of the interventions used by the Mathematics
Department in assessing the Grade 7 entrants in their preparedness in Discussion of the results
doing mathematical calculations, the result of the test was as follows:
Description and interpretation of the
1. 24% of the students were highly numerate significance of the results
2. 75% of the students were moderately numerate
3. 1.3% of the students were non-numerate Discussion of whether the objectives were
met or not.
Based on the result, almost 99% of the identified learners with low
performance in Mathematics have achieved and met the objectives of
Project COUNTS. Therefore, there is a significant effect on the
performance of the learners in Mathematics.
The MBTS as an attribute of Project COUNTS is of great help in
increasing performance in Mathematics and in improving the numeracy
