A Before Reading
1 Look at the front cover of the book. What is the picture of?
2 Read about the story on the back of the book. Professor Challenger talks about a drawing and a
photograph. What do you think the drawing and the photograph show? Write about them or make
drawings.
B While Reading
3 Read to the end of Chapter 3. Write a new piece of the story. Write a conversation between Malone and
McArdle. Malone must explain to McArdle what has happened since their first conversation. Here is a
section from the end of Chapter 3. The dotted line shows you where to put your new piece of story.
Later that evening I went to see Mr McArdle, my boss at the Daily Gazette. I told
him everything that had happened.
‘So you are going to look for Professor Challenger’s Lost World,’ said Mr McArdle.
‘Well, Malone, you are going to have an adventure. Good luck to you.’
4 You are Edward Malone. Make notes while you read Chapters 4 and 5 because you are going to write a
report for the Daily Gazette about your journey. Stop writing your notes after you have read this
paragraph on page 31:
Then I wrote a report for Mr McArdle. I threw it across to Sancho. ‘Tell the
Indian to take this with him. Tell him to send it to London,’ I said.

Each male pterodactyl sat on a stone. Their long grey wings were folded and they did not move
at all. They waited and watched with their red eyes. It was a horrible sight. I felt sick because
of the smell.
b) Write two short descriptions of places. Write one description of a place you like and one
description of a place you don’t like. You can use words from paragraphs (i) and (ii).
