ICT APPLICATIONS

1. Paper based communications

➢ Flyers
➢ Posters
➢ Brochures
➢ Newsletters
All the above media could be created using a word processing software or desktop publishing
software (DTP)
2. Advantages of using websites for communication
➢ Sound/video/animations can be added
➢ Hyperlinks can be used to link to other web sites
➢ Navigate buttons help to browse through different webpages
➢ Can be seen by global audience
➢ Can’t be defaced or thrown away as paper-based documents
➢ It is easier to update a website

3. Disadvantages of using websites for advertising

➢ Threat of hackers and viruses
➢ Risk of potential pharming or getting navigated to undesirable websites
➢ It’s necessary to have a computer/smart phone and a stable internet connection to
access the websites
➢ It’s not as portable as paper-based systems
➢ It is costly for the companies to maintain and update their websites.
➢ It’s difficult to target the correct audience as it’s a global system

4. Advantages of Multimedia Presentations

➢ Use of sound, video and animation can grab the attention of the audience
➢ Interactive hyperlinks could be included
➢ Use of transition effects
➢ Presentation can be interactive
➢ Presentations can be tailored to suit to a particular audience

5. Disadvantages of Multimedia Presentations

➢ Special expensive equipment is needed.
➢ Equipment failure can be a disaster
➢ Internet access is required
➢ The actual message could get overlooked by the effects of animations and unnecessary
texts/images

6. Advantages of Paper based presentations

➢ Disabled people doesn’t have to go to the venue of the presentation
➢ Its possible to print it out in Braille for the blind people
➢ The recipient can read the presentation at any time they want as they have a permanent copy

7. Disadvantages of Paper based presentations
➢ The hardcopies need to be distributed
➢ There are no special effects as sound, animations or video
➢ Printing cost is involved

8. Software used to generate Music scores

➢ Using music samplers and mixers allow to modify the original tracks
➢ Electronic instruments can be played back through electronic effects machines
➢ Synthesizers are used to combine simple wave forms to produce complex music creations
➢ Electronic organs can mimic any other instruments
➢ Software can automatically correct the music scores
➢ No need to understand the music notations to write a music score
➢ Music notes are automatically printed out in the correct format.

9. Cartoons Using 3d Animations

➢ A 3D skeleton of the objects are designed on the computer.
➢ Key frames (starting and ending point) are defined by the animator
➢ Morphing/tweening is done to change the appearance of the object
➢ A realistic image is made in the final stage. Its called as rendering

10. How Mobile phones communicate using mobile towers

➢ Mobile phones communicate using Towers placed in cells networked together
➢ Each tower transmits within its own cell.
➢ If you are driving a car and you reach the end of a cell the signals starts to weaken. This will
be recognized by the network and the mobile phone picks up the signal in one of the adjacent
cells.
➢ If a person is making international calls or messages satellite technology is used.

11. Advantages of mobile phones for communication

➢ There is no need to look for public telephones in an emergency
➢ Its possible to conduct personal/ or business phone calls on the move
➢ facilitates
➢ Calls/text messages/Internet browsing/health monitoring/weather forecast
➢ Text messages conveys messages quicker and is less expensive than phone calls
➢ Predictive texting increases the speed of typing
➢ Mobile phones can access to internet either using the cellular network or using a Wi-Fi
hotspot

12. What is Internet telephony?

Internet telephony facilitates telephone conversations using internet.
VoIP – Voice over Internet Protocol is a internet telephony
VoIP converts sound into discrete digital packets which can be send to the destination via
internet.
It facilitates either free calls or calls at local rate.
As VoIP uses built in microphones, cameras and webcams, video chat is also possible
One of its disadvantages is poor sound quality.

13. Advantages of using sensors in measuring applications
➢ Sensors won’t forget to measure the data. They measure the physical quantities continuously
➢ The reading will be more accurate than manual measurements
➢ After measurement, Computers can produce graphs for analysis
➢ It’s Safer to use sensors and computers for measurement applications in hazardous
experiments or for measuring a patient with a contagious disease’ vital signs
➢ Potential cost saving as only fewer staffs needed as measuring is done by sensors

14. Disadvantages of using Sensors

➢ Computers won’t be able to respond to unusual circumstances
➢ Computer equipment and measuring sensors are expensive to purchase and set up
➢ If the computer malfunctions a good back up procedure should be there to store the measured
data.
➢ A student doing the measurements manually for his project may learn the concepts better than
relying on sensors.

15. Measuring Pollution In a river using Sensors

➢ Sensors are placed at 2 different positions in the river
➢ Sensors continuously measure the (oxygen/acidity/light) analogue quantities and it’s
converted to digital signals using an ADC.
➢ These Digital signals are sent to the computer and the computer stores this data
➢ Oxygen/acidity levels are compared with the historical data and the preset values stored in the
memory
➢ Pollution level at different places is measured to see if they are different and it helps in
finding the source of pollution
