The DST/NRF South African Research Chair Initiative (SARChI) in Antibiotic Resistance and One
Health, under the leadership of Professor Sabiha Essack at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in
Durban, South Africa is pleased to announce the following postgraduate opportunities for 2023:
The research programme in Antibiotic Resistance and One Health encompasses the disciplines of
epidemiology, infectious diseases, medical, veterinary and environmental microbiology, genomics,
metagenomics, bioinformatics, mathematical modelling, anthropology and public health.
The aim of this project is to determine whether the longitudinal metagenomic surveillance of the
microbiome, resistome and mobilome from waste water proximate to vulnerable human and food
animal populations is (1) representative of their microbiota and (2) superior to or representative of
conventional clinical, veterinary and environmental AMR surveillance, thereby establishing proof of
concept of an alternate antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring system (ALARMS). A second aim
is to delineate metagenomic signatures of AMR in selected sub-populations in correlation with
ethnographic data to ascertain socio-behavioural drivers of AMR.
