Egyptian Architecture
Like the Mesopotamians, the ancient Egyptians produced a great architecture by marshalling the forces
of their entire civilization and directing those forces in the service of widely held cultural values. This
architecture is much more varied than you may imagine, and it is not only largely understandable to the
modern mind but also highly informative about design ideas applicable in any era. (2)
Egypt’s impact on later cultures was immense. You could say that Egypt provided the building blocks for
Greek and Roman culture, and, through them, influenced all of the Western tradition. Today, Egyptian
imagery, concepts, and perspectives are found everywhere. (13)
III. Influences
Geography
The geography of Egypt is dominated by one great river, the Nile, see Figure 19. (2) The influence of this
river on Egyptian culture and development cannot be overstated—without its presence, the civilization
would have been entirely different. The Nile provided not only a constant source of life-giving water, but
created the fertile lands that fed the growth of this unique (and uniquely resilient) culture. (13)
The annual inundation of the Nile was also a reliable, and measurable, cycle that helped form their
concept of the passage of time. In fact, the calendar we use today is derived from one developed by the
ancient Egyptians. (13)
Geological
Egypt had limestone in the north, sandstone in the central region & granite in the south. The gigantic
scale of Egyptian architecture was mainly possible due to the Egyptian methods of quarrying,
transporting & raising enormous blocks of stone to position. Sun-dried & kiln burnt bricks made from
Nile mud & reeds and papyrus were used for palaces & houses, while stone was used for pyramids &
temples. (14)
Climatic
Egypt has a warm, sunny climate with very little rainfall that has led to the preservation of its ancient
buildings. Since sufficient light reached the interiors through doors & roof slits, Egyptian architecture is
characterized by the absence of windows. The absence of rain also resulted in the use of flat roof with
thick stone slabs. (14)
Religious
The belief in life after death made the Egyptians to build numerous tomb-houses & pyramids for the
preservation of the dead. (14) Egyptians believed strongly in an afterlife in which the ka, or life-force,
was reunited with the ba, or physical manifestation, to become an akh, or spirit. (2)
Social
The Pharaoh was considered to be the descendant of the sun god. Social life is graphically depicted in
the wall sculptures of tombs. Slave labor is written all over the monuments of Egypt with the priests
enjoying an exalted position in society. (14)
Historical
The history of Egypt begins in about 3000 BCE with the union of Upper and Lower Egypt by Menes, the
pharaoh king of Upper Egypt. Its history is divided into thirty dynasties. (2) In our references, these
dynasties were split up into three kingdoms, as follows:
1. Early Dynastic Period and Old Kingdom (First-Eighth Dynasties, ca. 2920-2134 BCE)
-Elaborate rituals were performed inside tomb chambers to ensure that the transformation from
life to death was successful, especially the pharaoh. (2)
-By the Third Dynasty, the political stability of Egypt was secure, with Zoser (2686–2613 BCE)
creating building projects. (10)
-Snefru (2613-2589 BCE) ruled the Fourth Dynasty and built 3 pyramids before the culmination
of Great Pyramids.
-The Fourth-Dynasty pharaohs known as Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure (or Cheops, Chephren,
and Mycerinus in Greek transliteration) created the trio of large pyramids at Giza (2550–2460
BCE). (2)
expulsion of the Hyksos came the New Kingdom, which was characterized by an invigorated
dynastic line of pharaohs and an increasingly powerful hereditary priesthood who brought Egypt
to new heights of political and cultural brilliance.
1. Orientation
The river and the sun’s path form an implicit perpendicular cross axis that orders much design and
construction in ancient Egypt. Generally, most temples and tombs in Egypt are aligned along the
east-west axis. The pyramids at Giza are precisely oriented to the cardinal points. (16)
2. Axial Planning
Axiality is one of the most dominant aspects of Egyptian art and architecture. Rooms in most
tombs and temples, for instance, were symmetrically disposed like mirror images on either side of
a central axis. (16)
3. Surface Articulation
Exterior and interior walls, as well as the columns and piers, were covered with hieroglyphic and
pictorial frescoes and carvings painted in brilliant colors. Many motifs of Egyptian ornamentation
are symbolic, such as the scarab, or sacred beetle, the solar disk, and the vulture. Other common
motifs include palm leaves, the papyrus plant, and the buds and flowers of
the lotus. Hieroglyphs were inscribed for decorative purposes as well as to record historic events
or spells. (17)
V. Architectural Example
Let us discuss the development of architecture in Egypt according to the three periods of Egyptian
dynasties.
1. Mastabas, the earliest tomb, were built as eternal houses for the departed and were in all likelihood
based on the design of the dwellings of the living.
-Ordinary houses were constructed of reed, thatch, and wood, materials wholly unsuited for a
permanent residence, so the builders of mastaba tombs sought greater durability by using brick
while retaining characteristic details provided by the customary bundled reeds and wooden
supports.
-The basic mastaba (Figure 21) was a blocklike structure above ground containing a small room,
called serdab, for offerings and another chamber for the body and a statue of the deceased. (2)
2. Pyramids
As the religious ritual prescribed by the priesthood evolved to enhance further the significance of the
pharaoh, the mastaba was likewise enlarged, eventually producing the pyramid. (2) The use of pyramid
shapes was a visual symbol of the connection between the ruler and the sun god, Ra.
-one of the Fourth Dynasty pharaohs known a Khufu (2551–2528 BCE) has the largest
pyramid
-The 755-by-755-foot base covers over thirteen acres; the sides rise at an angle of
51°50’40” to an apex at 481 feet.
-Most of the stone in the pyramid is limestone, although the large pharaoh’s chamber in
the center is made of granite.
-The roughly finished lowest chamber is thought to represent the underworld. The
middle chamber, the so-called Queen’s Chamber, probably contained an over life-size
statue of Khufu and served as his spirit chamber, or serdab. The top, or King’s Chamber,
beautifully constructed of red granite, contains a granite sarcophagus in which Khufu
was in fact buried.
-In Figure 26, five massive sets of horizontal granite slabs form relieving chambers
stacked between the saddle roof and the flat ceiling of the crypt as a means of reducing
weight and pressure from above.
-The corbeled gallery leading to the King’s chamber is also a construction marvel, rising
twenty-six feet in height, a splendid contrast to a four-foot-high ascending passage to
which it connects.
-Its orientation, so close to true north, has raised the question of how the ancient
Egyptians managed to achieve such accuracy.

5. Obelisks
-The Obelisks symbolized the sun god Ra and it was believed that the structure possessed magical power
and protected the temples and tombs.
-It is a monumental tapering column carved from a single block of stone.
Egyptian Columns
The Egyptians were the first not just to develop advanced stone work, but also to develop the column as
more than just a loadbearing device—it had symbolic importance.
1. papyrus column- there was the so-called bud form, which was usually used in outer courts,
and the open form, found in a temple’s central area.
