WHAT IS HAZARDOUS WASTE
PROPERTIES?

A hazardous waste properties is a characteristic of

substance that, when present in a waste, indicates
that the waste poses a sufficient threat to merit
regulation as hazardous.
PURPOSES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION AGENCY

The Environmental Protection Agency protects

people and the environment from significant
health risks, conducts research and develops
environmental regulations.

HAZARDOUS WASTE
PROPERTIES USED BY U.S.
ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION AGENCY
(U.S. EPA)
4 PROPERTIES

IGNITABILITY CORROSIVITY REACTIVITY TOXICITY

Flammable Rust and decompose Explosive Poisonous

Example IGNITABILITY

SW 417 Combustible, flammable and sustain combustion

Waste of paints Liquid waste and has flash point less than 60°C
Capable under standard temperature and pressure,
of causing fire through friction
SW 322 It is an ignitable compressed gas
Waste of non-
It is an oxidizer
halogenated
organic
solvents
Example CORROSIVITY

Acidic or alkaline waste that can readily corrode or

SW 206 Spent
inorganic acids dissolve flesh or metals
Acidic or alkaline with pH less than or equal to 2, or
greater than or equal to 12.5
Corrodes steel at a rate greater than 6.35 mm per
year at a test temperature of 55°C
SW 401 Spent
alkalis containing
heavy metals
Example REACTIVITY

SW 317 Spent Wastes that readily explode

organometallic If the waste is unstable or undergoes violent
compounds
chemical reactions (e.g. catching fire or exploding
when exposed to water or air) which releases toxic
gases
If the waste reacts rapidly with water forming
potentially explosive mixtures or generates toxic
SW 317 Waste
from explosives gases
manufacturing

Example TOXICITY

SW 101 Waste
containing
arsenic
If it exceeds specified concentrations of certain
metals and organic compounds

SW 101 Waste
containing
mercury

PROPERTIES USED BY

(JAS)
"SCHEDULED WASTE"

Any wastes that possess hazardous

characteristics and have the potential to
adversely affect to the public health and
environment.
5 PROPERTIES

IGNITABILITY CORROSIVITY REACTIVITY TOXICITY INFECTIOUS

Flammable Rust and decompose Explosive Poisonous Easily spread

Example INFECTIOUS

SW 403 Discarded
drugs Ability to spread diseases or illness through bacteria,
virus, fungus or other microorganisms
Any waste that consists human or animal tissue,
blood or other body fluids
Other pharmaceutical products, swabs or dressings
SW 404 Clinical
wastes
Conclusion

Close monitoring of the industries is needed to

ensure that all the waste generators are following
the regulations stated under the Environmental
Protection Agency.
