Activity 3

Name:____________________________________ Date:____________

Answer the following questions.

1. Recall a recent incident in your life when you had to make a decision, Narrate
the situation below. Indicate what the decision was about, the focus that were
involved and how you arrived at your decision.
Answer:
I had to make a decision whether to leave my high-paying job which I am
not passionate of or to go for the job that I am passionate about even though
the pay is half of my present salary. My high-paying job has all the good
benefits, I was able to elevate my lifestyle, however, the job becomes more
toxic and I wasn’t productive anymore because of stress and trauma. As to the
job I am passionate about, it was really good because I would love what I was
going to do, however since I am the eldest child and the breadwinner of the
family, the pay that I would get from the job is not enough, unlike the other job.
I arrived at my decision to really leave my high-paying job because of the
incident in which my supervisor confront me in front of my other teammates,
making me feel so inferior and even humiliating me through words.
2. What factors influenced you in making your decision?
Answer:
People are constantly faced with choices, both major and minor. One
aspect of cognitive psychology that has drawn interest is how people make their
decisions. Theories have been developed to explain how individuals make
decisions and the types of variables that will continue to affect decision-making
in the future. Heuristics have also been studied in order to comprehend the
decision-making process.
Several factors influence decision-making. These factors, including past
experience cognitive biases (Stanovich & West, 2008), age and individual
differences (Bruin, Parker, & Fischoff, 2007), belief in personal relevance
(Acevedo, & Krueger, 2004), and an escalation of commitment, influence what
choices people make. Understanding the factors that influence the decision-
making process is important to understanding what decisions are made. That is,
the factors that influence the process may impact the outcomes.
Heuristics serve as a framework in which satisfactory decisions are made
quickly and with ease (Shah & Oppenheimer, 2008). Many types of heuristics
have been developed to explain the decision-making process; essentially,
individuals work to reduce the effort they need to expend in making decisions,
and heuristics offer individuals a general guide to follow, thereby reducing the
effort they must disburse. Together, heuristics and factors influencing decision-
making are significant aspects of critical thinking (West, Toplak, & Stanovich,
2008). There is some indication that this can be taught, which benefits those
learning how to make appropriate and the best decisions in various situations
(Nokes &Hacker, 2007).

3. Which of the following did you consider most in making your decision: what
will make you feel satisfied, what is most beneficial or practical, or what you
believed was the most moral thing to do? Elaborate your answer.
Given the situation I narrated above, my decision-making was more on
beneficial and practical and what I believed was the most moral thing to do.
Because at that time, my younger brother and sister were both in college, my
parents don’t have a high income to support both of them, so I have to make a
decision practically, I have to consider the things that would affect my decision
in the long run. Actually, I made my decision after my brother was able to get a
stable job, that was time I decided to leave my high-paying job just in time
when my supervisor confronted me. So, I did it because that’s what I believe as
the most moral thing to do.
