10’ at GMT 19d 02h 52m 24s. If IE was 1.5’ off & HE 12m, calculate the Intercept & direction of PL.
Without working out the sight again, find what longitude will an observer get if the above sight was
calculated using Longitude by chronometer.

4. A vessel in DR 49° 30' S 069° 14' E took a star sight & obtained intercept of 9.5' towards bearing
056°. After this sight vessel steered 144° (T) for 35 miles and obtained another intercept of 8.2'
towards and azimuth 324°. Find vessel’s position at second observation if the DR used for
calculating second observation was obtained by applying the run on ITP position.
(Answer: 49° 46.2' S 069° 51.0' E)

5. At 1754 hours a star sight gave an intercept of 5.0' towards & azimuth 125° (T). At 1812 hrs another
sight gave azimuth 175° (T) and intercept 3.0' away. Both the intercepts were calculated using 1800
DR position 30° N 30° E. Find the position of the vessel at 1800 hrs if the vessel was steaming a
course of 205° (T) at 12 knots. (Answer: 30° 06' N 030° 12' E)

6. On 22 Sept 1992 AM in DR 46° 17’ S, the sextant altitude of Sun’s LL was 29° 25’ at GMT 22d 19h
33m 51s. IE 3.0’ off & HE 11m. The ship steamed 300° (T) for 45’ miles when the sextant meridian
altitude of Sun’s LL was 43° 57.9’ north of the observer. Find the ship’s position at meridian passage
of Sun. (Answer: 45° 53.7’ S 160° 40.8’ W)

7. Using DR 10° 26’ N 059° 50’ E, three simultaneous observations gave following results. Polaris
observed latitude 10° 27’ N azimuth 001°, Star X Observed longitude 059° 46’ E azimuth 069°, Star
Y Intercept 1.2’ away azimuth 150°. Find the position of the vessel and calculate the Index Error,
which was not applied in the calculation. Assume there is no other error.
(Answer: 10° 25.8’ N, 059° 44.5’ E, IE 1.3’ On)

8. On 30th Nov 1992 DR 15° S 90° 45’ E the back-angle observation of Sun LL east of meridian gave
sextant altitude 117° 11.6’. IE 2.8’ on & HE 12m, when chronometer showed 03h 54m 32s (error
01m 31s fast). Find the PL & position through which it passes. (Answer: Obs long 90° 57.2’ E, PL
018.4° – 198.4°)

If the vessel sailed on 125° (T) till meridian passage that day (run 30 miles) find the altitude to be
set on the sextant for a meridian altitude observation. (Answer: Obs long 90° 57.2’ E, PL 018.4° –
198.4°, SA 83° 28.8’)

9. A morning sight of the Sun at 0850 ship’s time on 1st Sep 1992 using DR latitude 26° 20’ S gave
observed longitude of 165° 06’ E. Using estimated speed of 18 kts on course 120° (T), calculate
(a) the ship’s time for Sun’s meridian passage &
(b) The sextant altitude to set for observation of LL of Sun’s at meridian passage.
Ship’s time = GMT + 11 hours, HE 18m, IE 2.0’ off. (Answer: 11h 56m 01s, 54° 47’)

10. On 29th Nov 92, vessel in DR 26° 25’ N 130° 30’ W the True altitude Declination & GHA of sun were
27° 50’, 21° 36.4’ S & 89° 49.4’ respectively. Calculate the Intercept and direction of PL. Given IE
3.0’ on the arc, HE 12m. (Answer: Intercept 2.9’ Away, Az 136.7°)

11. At 0803 an observer on a vessel steering 336° (T) at 14 Kts found the True Altitude of Sun to be 89°
29.2' bearing SE. Dec of Sun was 13° 26' S and GHA 304° 51.2'. Later at 1012 hrs a point of land in
position 12° 18' S 054° 48' E was detected by Radar range at 23' miles. Find vessel’s position at
1012. (Answer: 12° 37’ S 054° 34.1’ E)

12. On 29th Nov 1992 at GMT 06h 16m 00s, the true altitude of Sun was 89° 26’. The vessel was on a
course of 270° (T) at a speed of 22.5 kts. Exactly four minutes later, the true altitude of Sun was
again 89° 26’. Find the position of the vessel at the time of second observation if the Sun passed
south of the observer at meridian passage. (Answer: 21° 11.2’ S 082° 34.6’ E)

13. A vessel took two simultaneous observations on GMT 16th Jan 1992, 23h 40m 02s. The first
observation of Venus, which was east of the observer’s meridian, gave sextant altitude of 19° 40.5’.
The second observation of the Moon which was South of the observer (Azimuth 180°) gave sextant
altitude of the Upper Limb 82° 11.8’. If the IE was 1.2’ off & HE 31 m, find vessel’s position. (Answer:
32° 53.9’ N 101° 23.1’ E)

14. A vessel near International Date Line took two simultaneous observations on GMT 22nd Sep 1992,
16h 25m 13s. The first observation of Moon’s UL gave sextant altitude of 32° 13.3’. The second
observation of Venus which was South of the observer (Azimuth 180°) gave sextant altitude of 48°
