CENTRE OF STUDIES FOR SURVEYING SCIENCE & GEOMATICS

FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND SURVEYING

LAB 4

TOPIC : TOPOGRAPHIC PLAN COMPILATION, ORTHORECTIFICATION,DIGITAL

ELEVATION MODELS

STUDENT : BACHELOR OF SURVEYING SCIENCE AND GEOMATICS (HONS)

CODE : GLS 615

PERIOD : 3 WEEKS

OBJECTIVE : To give exposure and skills in the process of using digital photogrammetry to
produce an orthophoto images, DEM file andextraction details including
Topographic Plan

GOAL : Producing Orthophoto Images and Topographic Plan.

Orthotophotographs are photographic images constructed from vertical ornear-
vertical aerial photographs, such that the effects of central perspective, relief
displacement, and tilt are (practically) removed.

INSTRUMENTATION:

1. Digital Photogrammetric Software

2. Strip of Aerial Photo (from Lab 3)

PROCEDURE :
1. Preparation
- All Outputs from lab 3.
- Calibrated aerial images
- Completed Interior orientation
- Completed Relative orientation
- Completed Absolute orientation
- Completed bundle adjustment
- Anaglyph spectacles

2. Execution
2.1 Stereo Model Mode (3D Stereo view)
2.2 Determine the number of layers to be created
2.3 Create all layers
2.4 Create all attributes for each layer
2.5 Activate plotting tool
2.6 Perform 3D plotting using 3D stereo tool (anaglyph spectacle)
2.7 Generate DEM
2.8 Generate orthophoto
2.9 Produce a proper Topographic Plan

3. Accuracy and Quality control criteria

i. DEM ground sampling distance
ii. Orthophoto ground sampling distance
PROCEDURE

I. Map Compilation (Creating the Classifier)

• To create layer with classifier, at Vectors menu, select Create layer with classifier.
The Classifier window automatically appears as below. User can create new, add,
save, import and export classifier. User can manipulate layer, code and attribute
at this window.

• Then click add layer to create new layer

• Create new layer for building, road, DTM and tree. Then click add code to add
code. Choose the colour, type of line, size etc. C for close polygon, L for line and P
for point. Repeat the same procedures for each layer and don’t forget to save the
created classifier.
• Once layer has been created, activate the layer to start plotting. Click the layer and
active layer will turn to red colour.
• Click Open new 2D-window icon and then click Toggle stereo on to plot in stereo
mode.
• To start plotting, put the marker at the selected object, then push Insert key (at
the keyboard). Use scroll wheel to adjust the marker and make sure the marker is
well place on the object. Push Enter key to stop.

II. Creating TIN

• Go to TIN menu, then click ‘create’.
• Make sure the starting level at 0 value while the value of interval is 1. Then the Border
is set as convex. Then click OK. But before do TIN, building’s line must be removed so
the TIN layer is not attached to building line.
III. Creating Contour
• Go to vectors menu, choose build contour then click from TIN.

IV. Creating Digital Elevation Model (DEM)

• To create DEM need to make sure that TIN already created. Go to DEM menu and
then click on the ‘build’ and choose ‘build from TIN’. Don’t forget to save DEM.
V. Creating Mosaic
• Click project menu and click Mosaic.
• Click on the Images tab and go to ‘current + next’.
• Then go to ROIs tab and click on the ‘Autobuilding’ to edit the picture. When ROIs
autobuilding window, set the trim off images edges at 25 and the quality is in the middle,
so the process become faster. Click OK.

• Then it will show green line which the area that will be cut to produce a Orthophoto.
After that save the ROIs.
• All the trim area can be previewed by click on ‘preview’ that have under Mosaic tab.
When click the preview, it will show the orthophoto. Then click ‘build’ to produce this
photo.
VI. Transferring Data to AutoCAD

• To transfer all the data from PHOTOMOD to AutoCAD need to make sure that the
data is save in DXF format.
• Open AutoCAD, then command ‘insert’ and insert all the data that need to put in
the AutoCAD.
• After all the data are inserted, create the border, legend, scale, the title of the
project etc. Finally produce Topo plan and submit in PDF format.
