The Washington Monument


Introduction

The Washington Monument was built between 1845 and 1885. This monument was built

in memory of George Washington as an appreciation for his self-sacrifice, devotions and

achievements to the state. This monuments symbolizes the gratitude of Americans to George

Washington who was a fatherly figure to their country. Furthermore, this monument was built to

attest the cause and faith he aspired while achieving the great American dream. The funds

mobilized for building this monument were obtained from Federal appropriations and Public

Subscriptions. The Washington monument is a segment of the National Park comprising of

scientific and scenic areas for tourist attraction. This Monument is protected by interior

department of the National Park Service to benefit and inspire the American people.

The Monument consists of four other historical areas linked to George Washington.

These are; Fort Necessity National Battlefield Site, George Washington’s birthplace National

Monument, Colonial National Historical Park and Morristown National Park. Therefore, this

monument was enshrined to honor the fallen hero by the Congress in 1783. However, the neglect

of congress to develop this monument prompted influential and eminent persons in Washington

to erect an appropriate Memorial Park for George Washington. Therefore, in 1833, the

Washington National Monument was established to articulate and honor George Washington

near the offices of Federal government. The popular public subscription collected funds

amounting to $70,000 to construct the monument. The design architect Robert Mills developed

revised design for the monument integrating various scientific and cultural aspects of Americans.

The Washington Monument Grounds (WAMO) is the cultural area of National Mall and

Memorial Parks (NAMA). Located in Washington D.C, it stands on 106 acres piece of land

consisting of inventory units developed on the East of 14th Street North of Constitutional
Avenue, the South of Tidal Basin and 17thy Street to the West. This monument is enshrined in

the National Register of Historic Places in October 1966. The monument was developed with

considerations of the rich American culture. The management of this monument relies on the

National Parks Registry but with strict supervision from Superintendent of Public buildings.

Construction of Washington Monument

The Congress granted authority for constructing the monument and in July 4, 1848 thus

prompting the laying of the first corner stone in the capital in 1973. The building of this

monument progressed effectively until the eruption of American Civil war between the Southern

and the Northern States. However, in in August 2nd 1876, President Grant approved appropriation

of funds and delegated the construction of the monument to Engineer Corps of War Department.

The monument was completed in 1880. The remaining construction work on the monument was

completed in 1885 and in 1926, the first electric elevator was installed.

The Importance of Washington Monument to American People

The significance of this monument are the contributions of George Washington during

the period of revolutionary war in July 1775. In this period, Washington was the commander of

the newly established Continental Army. He fought adversaries through zeal and zest thus

gaining international recognitions in the French and Indian wars. Furthermore, while fighting all

these wars, he combated myriad challenges facing his country since the USA had rich but

undeveloped resources. Therefore, he utilized the country’s limited resources in fighting his

adversaries who were united in thirteen small groups’ thus gaining independence for his country.

Due to his consistency and persistence, he obtained resources and essential requirement for some

leaders and governors thus being in a position to feed and clothe his troops. His determination
was desired by both civilians’ and military hence receiving numerous assistance in fighting for

his country and he won several victories for his country.

The Washington Monument was constructed to commemorate the Achievements and

self-sacrifices of George Washington. This monument reminds the Americans of their past and

the tremendous strides their country has made considering development, resource mobilization,

economics and democracy. This monument stands as a status for identity among the American

people. Significantly the positioning of this monument near the federal government signifies

respect and honor Americans have for their fallen heroes and leaders. Generally, the Washington

Monument signifies the price Americans paid in attaining their independence.

The Egyptian Model of obelisk used to build Washington Monument reveals and

analyses the selflessness and timelessness service of George Washington to his country. The

Obelisk symbolized pharaoh’s divine connection rule in Egypt. Furthermore, in Rome obelisks

signified the integration of the new Roman Empire. Generally, this monument signified a new

dawn for Americans. Therefore, this monument signifies the achievements of George

Washington in developing the most adored nation in the world. This monument reveals the

respect, awe, gratitude the nation is having for his founding leader. The monument symbolizes

strength, commitment and democracy of Americans. The vast and significant contributions

George Washington are enshrined in this monument.

The Washington Monument signifies the incorporation of American history. This

monuments prides itself with rich sources of American history. It develops curiosity among the

citizens in determining and analyzing the historical events associated with it. The scholarly

articles and journals published about this monument develops history through integrating of

performance and past activities of George Washington during his tenure as the President of USA.
This monument enables students and historians to write and develop historical articles through

realism and observations since the monument connects them with their past. These observations

enables students develop interests and skills on the American history.

The period of building this monument is significant to Americans since it elaborates on

different cultures, traditions science and timelines of events in which this monument was built.

These cultures and traditions portrays ancient civilization and inspirational ideas of Americans.

Integration of science and traditional values of Americans in constructing the Washington

Monument signifies the transformation of Scientific research from Ancient times to the modern

complex scientific and technological innovations in various industries such as medical,

manufacturing, Information Technology and geo-political sciences.
