Cladogram: Infer Evolutionary Relatedness

Cladograms are diagrams which depict the relationships between different groups of taxa called
“clades”. By depicting these relationships, cladograms reconstruct the evolutionary history (phylogeny) of the
taxa. Cladograms can also be called “phylogenies” or “Trees”. Cladograms are also constructed by grouping
organisms together based of their shared derived characteristics.
Example of Constructing a Cladogram

Character Shark Bullfrog Kangaroo Human
Placenta: Human
Vertebrae x x x x
2 pair of x x x Mammary Glands:

1. Given these character and taxa: 2. Draw a Venn diagram. Start 3. Convert the Venn Diagram into
with the character that is a cladogram.

outside. Inside each box, write
the taxa that have only that set
of characters.

Activity:
Convert the following data table into a Venn diagram, and then into a cladogram. Use another sheet of paper if
necessary. (15 points)
