1. For the following Data:

1000 , 1500 , 1750 , 15000 , 1000

Find
Mean ( X ) , Median , Mode , Range, and Standard Deviation (SD).

Mean = X = (1000+1500+1750+15000+1000)/5=4050

Median=

Mode=1000
Range=15000-1000=14000

Standard deviation=

2. Consider the following data:
X 20 21 25 31 33
Y 7 8 5 4 2
a. Find the regression equation.
b. Estimate the value of when .

Y= -0.3897 x + 15.314

Y when x = 40
Y = (-0.3897*40) + 15.3322 = -0.2558
3. Assume the likelihood that any flight on Delta Airlines arrives within 15 minutes of
the scheduled time is 0.90. We select 4 flights from yesterday.
i) What is the probability all four of the selected flights arrived within 15 minutes of the
scheduled time?
ii) What is the probability that none of the selected flights arrived within 15 minutes of
the scheduled time?
iii) What is the probability at least one of the selected flights did not arrive within 15
minutes of the scheduled time?

probability all flights = P(f) = 0.9

i) What is the probability all four of the selected flights arrived within 15 minutes of the
scheduled time?

P (f1 Ç f2 Ç f3 Ç f4) = 0.9*0.9*0.9*0.9 = 0.6561

ii) What is the probability that none of the selected flights arrived within 15 minutes of
the scheduled time?

P (f1` Ç f2` Ç f3` Ç f4`) =(1-0.9)! =0.0001

iii) What is the probability at least one of the selected flights did not arrive within 15
minutes of the scheduled time?

= 1 – probability all flights arrived = 1- 0.6561= 0.3439

4. Scores on an achievement test are known to be normally distributed with a mean of 420 and
a standard deviation of 80.
a. what is the probability of a score between 400 and 480?
b. What is the minimum test score needed in order to be in the top 5 % of all people taking the test?

"#µ
µ = 420 s = 80 Z= s

a. P (400 < X < 480)

400−420 480−420
P(
80
< z < 80
)
= P ( -0.25 < Z < 0.75)
= P (0.75) – {1- p (0.25)}
= 0.7734 – (1- 0.5987) = 0.3721

b. P (Z > score(S)) = 0.05 q(s)=0.95 between 0.9495 and 0.9505

(1.64+1.65)/2=1.645

P (Z > 1.645) = 0.05

X= (Z*s)+µ
X= (1.645*80) + 420 = 551.6
5. In developing patient appointment schedules, a medical center wants an estimate of the mean
time that a staff member spends with each patient. How large a sample should be taken if the
desired margin of error is 2 minutes at a 95% level of confidence? Use a planning value for
the population standard deviation of 8 minutes.

6. In a random sample of 12,447 hip replacement or revision surgery procedures
nationwide, 162 patients developed a surgical site infection.
Construct a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of all patients undergoing a hip
surgery procedure who develop a surgical site infection.

7. A soft drink maker claims that more than 50% of adults prefer its leading beverage over that
of its main competitor’s. To test this claim 500 randomly selected people were given the two
beverages in random order to taste. Among them, 270 preferred the soft drink maker’s brand,
211 preferred the competitor’s brand, and 19 could not make up their minds. Determine
whether there is sufficient evidence, at the 5% level of significance, to support the soft drink
maker’s claim against the default that the population is evenly split in its preference.

8. If the proportion of smokers in a city in 1974 was 28.8%, and in 1982 a sample of the
population of this city, 1283 people, was selected, 320 people who were smokers. Did the
percentage of smokers decrease between 1974 and 1982? Use the significance level of α =
0.05.

n=1283 , p=28.8/100=0.288 , p`=320/1283=0.249 , Zt= -1.645
