Lesson Plan
Business/Materials Lesson Objectives
- Picture of the author. - Reading a short-story.
- Audio player. - Improving the reading, speaking, writing, and
- Whiteboard. listening skills.
- Handouts. - Demonstrating their knowledge of new
vocabulary (saucers, parlor rug, hurricane lamps,
aroma, brewed, self-preservation).
- Developing students’ critical thinking.
- Noticing past simple tense patterns in the short
story.
- Assessment: Writing an essay called: “What
would you do if you knew this was the last
night of the world?". (5 students) read their
essay to the class. A quiz on vocabulary.
Objective Discussion:
- Show them the picture of the author and tell them that today we will read a short story
called The Last Night of the World by Ray Bradbury (point to the picture).
- And learn new vocabulary (saucers, parlor rug, hurricane lamps, aroma, brewed, self-
preservation). Noticing past simple tense patterns in the short story.
- And answering some critical thinking question.
- Writing an essay called: “What would you do if you knew this was the last night of
the world?"
- And next time their assessment is going to be (5 students) read their essay to the class.
- Ask for questions.
ACTIVITY1: Instruct and Model ❑ R ❑ W ❑ L ❑ S
-The vocabulary written on board (with sentences from the story) and I ask students what their
meaning might be then I give them their meaning.
Guided Practice ❑ R ❑ W ❑ L ❑ S
- Invite them to predict what is the story about from the title and ask them to make a 3-student
groups to discuss the possible answer (5m.).
Independent Practice ❑ R ❑ W ❑ L ❑ S
After finishing I choose 3 students to share their thoughts.

-I also ask them to take notes or highlight interesting sections to share later on with the class.
-I pause the audio on "It's not a matter of deserving, it's just that things didn't work out. I
notice you didn't even argue about this. Why not?” and ask them to predict the answer to that
question.

I elicit answers from students.
ACTIVITY3: Instruct and Model ❑ R ❑ W ❑ L ❑ S
-Playing the audio till the end of the story.
Guided Practice ❑ R ❑ W ❑ L ❑ S
-I ask students to read the story again and notice any patterns of past simple tense that we had
discussed before.
-Then I elicit answers from students

-I give them the handouts of a cloze passage from the short-story with word bank to answer
with a partner.
- I divide the into 4 groups and ask them to discuss the answers of the following questions (for
20 minutes then share them with me and the class, each group answer one random question):
1- What do you think is the moral of the story?
2- What might be a possible ending to the story?
3- Which character do you like the most? Why?
4- Why is there only one character that has a name?
5- What do you think the two little girls represent?
6- What do you think of the attitude of the husband and the wife?
- Students make and revise their essay and 5 students read it to the class (Reviewing
their essays and give them a written-feedback the next time).
- A quiz on vocabulary.
