Lesson Context:
Students will use paper and pencil to gather different kinds of textures using pencil, paper, glue
and scissors. The students will do this by walking around the classroom and locating different
textures to collect by using the pencil texture rubbing technique. Then the students will cut the
textures into different geometric shapes to make their own artwork. Then they will pick three
shapes to measure with rulers and find the area of.
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to explore different textures in their environment to create texture
rubbings in order to create a collage.
2. Students will be able to find the area of three geometric shapes within their artwork.
3. Students will be able to present their work, evaluate peer’s artwork and respond to journal
prompt.
Standards:
National-(VA:Cr1.2.3a): Apply knowledge of available resources, tools, and technologies to
investigate personal ideas through the art-making process.
KY-(VA:Pr5.1.3): Identify exhibit space and prepare works of art including artists’ statements,
for presentation.
KY-(VA:Re8.1.3): Interpret art by analyzing use of media to create subject matter, characteristics
of form, and mood.
Key Vocabulary:
Texture- describes the feel of an actual surface. The surface quality of an object can be real or
implied.
Collage-a piece of art made by sticking various different materials on to a backing.
Texture rubbing- is a copy of the texture of a surface created by placing a piece of paper or
similar material over the subject and then rubbing the paper with a pencil.
Area- the total space taken up by a flat (2-D) surface or shape of an object.
Materials:
● Paper
● Pencil
● Glue
● Scissors
● Ruler
● Smart board
● Document camera
Procedures/activities
● Introduction
1. Teacher will introduce the lesson beginning with a conversation about what the
students know about texture.
2. Teacher then introduces a powerpoint presentation on texture. This will include
the different kinds of texture (actual and implied) and examples of some artists
that use texture. This is also where the teacher will introduce collage and show
visual examples.
● Body of the lesson
1. The teacher will do a demonstration on how to gather textures around the
classroom. This is done by taking a piece of paper and holding it on to an object
with a texture like a wall or wood bookshelf, then running a pencil over the paper
until the texture appears on the paper. The teacher will demonstrate how to do
implied texture using the document camera.
2. Following the demonstration, the students will start to gather their textures from
the classroom. These will be actual and implied texture. The students will gather
implied texture by drawing what they think some textures would look like. So for
example, the students could draw fish scales or hair.
3. Teacher will then demonstrate on the document camera how to start cutting and
collaging the textures together. The teacher will draw out a design, for example a
tree, and show the students how to collage together the texture pieces to create a
piece of art.
4. Students will then start to gather their materials from the bins/cabinets and draw
out their own design to collage their textures, just as demonstrated.
5. Once students are complete with their collage, The teacher will give examples of
how to find areas of different shapes. The students will then pick three geometric
shapes to find the area of with their rulers and record all their work in their
journals.
● Cleanup
Each student will be responsible for returning all supplies to the assigned locations and throwing
away or storing scraps. Students will also be responsible for turning in the project in the
designated class tray.
● Conclusion
After cleanup, students will start a journal entry and respond to the writing prompt. The students
will then present their work to the class and conduct a class critique. The students will give
constructive suggestions and things they like about the artworks.
Assessment:
The students will be graded by turning in a completed collage artwork, geometry answers, and
conclusion activity. Their artwork must show many examples of texture, collaged into a design
and use of time in the classroom. Students will also be graded on journal entry and participation
in critique.
