Introduction
An endangered species is one which has been
categorized by the international union for conservation
of nature (IUCN) as likely to become extinct. IUCN red list logo:
Conservation biologists use the IUCN red list, where
'Endangered' is the second most severe conservation
status for wild populations, following critically
endangered. These are species which are in the verge of
going extinct is unless steps are taken soon to rescue it .
Endangered species are also a population which is a
high risk of becoming extinct because it is either few in
number or threatened by changing environment or
predation peramenters.
What causes animals to become endangered?
Humans are largely responsible when animals become extinct, endangered or threatened. These are some of the
reasons why animals become endangered:

Destruction of Habitat
Humans destroy the animal's habitat (the natural environment of a living thing) when they fill swamps and, dam
rivers and cut down trees to build homes, roads and other developments.

Pollution
Oil spills, acid rain and water pollution have been devastating for many species of fish and birds.

Hunting and Fishing

Many animals are over hunted because their meat, fur and other parts are very valuable.

Exotic Species
When animals or plants arrive into a new habitat from a foreign place they sometimes introduce diseases that the
native species can't fight or take up the natural resources for themselves. These invasive species can also prey on
the native species.

Conservation Projects

Project Snow Leopard

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change launched Project Snow Leopard in
2009 to promote an inclusive, participatory, and landscape-based approach to conserve Snow
Leopards and their habitat in India. The project aims to protect and conserve the high-
altitude of the Himalayan and trans-Himalayan regions to improve wildlife conservation and
adopt a participatory approach that involves the local communities and other stakeholders in
safeguarding the snow leopard and its habitat.
Project Tiger

Project Tiger is a tiger conservation program started in April 1973 by the Government of
India. The aim of the project is ensuring a high population of the Bengal tiger in its
natural habitats, protecting it from extinction, and preserving areas of biological
importance as a natural heritage that represent the diversity of ecosystems across the
tiger's range in the country. The project's task force visualize these tiger reserves as
breeding area, from which animals would migrate to forests. Funds and commitment
were donated to support the intensive program of habitat protection and rehabilitation
under the project.
