LAS 3. Franciscan Spirituality

Jump Start
Trust in God

Have you experienced doubting God? If yes, cite instance; if not, enumerate
instance when you felt His presence.

Yes. That was, at the time, my interpretation of the situation. When I was 15, I had a
special place in the house where I would pray. When I did so, I frequently felt a warm
sensation over my head, as if God himself was touching me. After a few months of this, I
realized that the source of the heat was the light bulb over my head. This was a far more
practical answer than I'd hoped for, but I had to admit that it was all there had ever been
to it. Or perhaps my night had been dark and terrifying, and what I sensed was the Lord
of Light's presence.

Lesson check
A. Complete the following by filling in the blanks.
1. Franciscan spirituality is rooted in the general Judeo-Christian,
Roman Catholic and Biblical traditions.
2. Minority is expressed in Poverty and Humility. Poverty is the
external expression of Minority while Humility is the internal
expression of it.
3. To live as sisters and brothers of all people and of all creation.
4. To be loyal to the Church in an attitude of dialogue and
collaboration with her ministers
5. To live in simplicity, humility and minority

B. Define the following words by giving substantial information or ideas related

to them. Write at least two or three ideas for each word.
1. Spirituality
- is the broad concept of a belief in something beyond the self. It may
involve religious traditions centering on the belief in a higher power, but it
can also involve a holistic belief in an individual connection to others and
to the world as a whole.

ADMIN 3
2. Charism
- is an extraordinary power given by the Holy Spirit. These are believed by
followers to be supernatural graces which individual Christians need to fulfill
the mission of the Church.
3. Minority
- refers to a group of people whose practices, race, religion, ethnicity, or other
characteristics are fewer in numbers than the main groups of those
classifications.
4. Humility
- humility can mean a recognition of self in relation to a deity or deities, and
subsequent submission to said deity as a member of that religion
5. Fraternity
- is an organization, society, club or fraternal order traditionally of men
associated together for various religious or secular aims.

C. Answer the Following question briefly, but substantially.

1. What does the statement mean? “Without becoming poor, one cannot
enter and sustain real fraternal relationship with others within the
Franciscan community.”
- According to this quote, if we do not first become impoverished, we will not
be able to see each other's true brotherhood. In the event that things
become challenging, we may see who the real ones are and how they might
assist us. Before we can join the Franciscan community, we must first be
poor.
2. As a Franciscan student how can we live a Life in Minority, Poverty, and
Solidarity.
- As a Franciscan student we can live a life in Minority, Poverty and
Solidarity by praying for a better understanding of minority, poverty and
solidarity. And stay committed to the practice of mercy.

D. Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon of St. Francis of Assisi wrote a
prayer-song called the “Canticle of Creation.” Below are some verses from
the canticle. Each contains clues about a part of God’s creation: the earth,
water, fire, the sun, or the moon. Use the clues to finish each sentence. Then
unscramble the letters in the boxes and place them below to see a “kingly”
gift God has in store for you!

1. Praised be you my Lord with all your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun,
Who is the day through whom you give us light.
2. Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
in the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.
3. Praised be you, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, and fair and
stormy, all weather's moods, by which you cherish all that you have made.
4. Praised be you my Lord through Sister Water,
So useful, humble, precious and pure.

ADMIN 4
5. Praised be you my Lord through Brother Fire,
through whom you light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust
and strong.
6. Praised be you my Lord through our Sister,
Mother Earth who sustains and governs us, producing varied fruits with
colored flowers and herbs.
7. Praise be you my Lord through those who grant pardon for love of you and
bear sickness and trial.

Points to Ponder On
1. What kind of saint is St. Francis referred to as?
- St. Francis is patron saint of animal and ecology, he was born in Italy
around 1181-1182. After a wild youth and a brief career as a soldier, Francis
had a conversion experience that is inspired him to renounce his family’s
wealth and devote his life to God.

2. Is the prayer of St Francis really written by him?

- “The prayer of St. Francis” is generally believed to be only about 100 years
old, a creative and sincere prayer penned by an anonymous French writer.

3. Where did the Peace Prayer of Saint Francis come from?

- For many years the prayer was attributed to St. Francis of Assisi (1181-
1226), but modern research has established, beyond argument, that it is
not his work. In fact he had dead almost 700 years when it was first printed,
anonymously, by a French clerical magazine, La Clochette, in 1912.

Good Job!
