GEOLAB (iM) SDN. BHD toss1-—y
11.1 Preparation of specimens. Prepare minimum six numbers of test
specimens. In the case of large masonry units, representative portions, e.g.
cubes, may be cut from the masonry unit in different positions as in
Attachment 1.
11.2 Drying, Dry the test specimens to constant mass mens in a ventilated oven
at a temperature of 70°c:5% for aggregate concrete, autoclaved aerated
concrete, natural stone and manufactured stone masonry units or 105°o#5%
for clay units. Constant mass is reached, if during the drying process in two
subsequent weighing with a 24h interval, the loss in mass between the two
determinations is not more than 0.1% of the total mass.
11.3 Allow the specimens to cool at room temperature. When cool, measure the
dimensions of the faces to be immersed accordingly and calculate the
g7088 area As. Place the specimens with their faces (bed faces in the case
of clay units) supported on a supporting devices so that they are clear of
the base of the tray and immerse in water to a depth of Smm-tImm for the
duration of the test. In the case of masonry units with an extremely
irregular face, raise the water-level in such a way that the complete surface
just makes contact with the water surface.
Activate the timing device. Maintain the water level constant throughout
the test.
After the immersion time (ja) remove the specimens, wipe off surface
water and weigh them (mo,)
11.4 Calculation and expression of results. Calculate the coefficient of water
absorption of the masonry units due to capillary action of each specimen
to the nearest 1g/(m?x s”*) using the following formula:
Mgos— Mas X 10° [ g/(m2 x 50,5) ]
Antes
Caloulate the percentage of absorption using the formula below:
Cw,
Absorption, % = [ (s0.s— Mays)! May.s1X 100

1.0 OBJECTIVE
1.1 To establish a procedure for determination of moisture content for fine, medium and
coarse grained soils using oven dried method.
2.0 SCOPE
2.1 This method covers the determination of the moisture content of a specimen of soil as a
percentage of its dry mass.
3.0 REFERENCE
3.1 BS 1377:
ED-GE-0025
4.0 INSTRUMENT
4.1 Drying oven, capable of maintaining a temperature of 105°C to 110°C.
For fine-grained soils
4.2 Glass weighting bottle, fitted with a ground glass stopper or cap, or a suitable corrosion-
resistant metal container.
4.3 Balance readable to 0.01g.
For medium-grained soils
4.4 An airtight corrosion-resistant container of about S00g capacity
4.5 Balance readable to 0.1g,
4.6 A scoop of suitable size.
For coarse-grained soils
4.7 An airtight corrosion-resistant container of about 4kg capacity
4.8 Balance readable to 1g.
4.9 A scoop of suitable size.

5.0 PROCEDURE
For fine grained soils
5.1 Clean and dry the weighting bottle or metal container and weigh it to the nearest 0.01g
(m,). Take a sample of at least 30g of soil, crumble and place loosely in the container or
‘weighing bottle, and replace the lid or stopper. Then weigh the container or bottle and
contents to the nearest 0.01g (ma).
5.2 Remove the lid or stopper, and place the container or bottle with the lid and contents in
the oven and dry at 105°C to 110°C. The period required for drying will vary with the type
of soil and the size of sample but the sample shall be deemed to be dry when the
differences in successive weighing of the cooled sample at interval of 4h do not exceed
0.1% of the original mass of the sample. Do not replace the lid or stopper while the
sample is in the oven.
5.3 After drying, remove the container or bottle and contents from the oven and let it cool.
5.4 Replace the lid and then weigh the container or bottle and contents to the nearest 0.01g
(ms).
For medium-grained soils
5.5 Clean and dry the container and weigh it to the nearest 0.1g (m:). Take a sample of at
least 300g of soil, crumble and place loosely in the container, and replace the lid. Then
weigh the container and contents to the nearest 0.1g (ma).
5.6 Remove the lid and place the container and contents in the oven and dry at 105°C to
110°C. The period required for drying will vary with the type of soil, the size of sample
and the number of samples in the oven but the sample shall be deemed to be dry when
the differences in successive weighing of the cooled sample at intervals of 4h do not
exceed 0.1% of the original mass of the soil. Do not replace the lid while the sample is in
the oven,
5.7 After drying, replace the lid and allow the whole to cool.
5.8 Weigh the container and contents to the nearest 0.1g (ms).
For coarse-grained soils
5.9 Clean and dry the container and weigh it to the nearest 1g (m:). Take a sample of at least
3kg of soil, place loosely in the container, and replace the lid. Then weigh the container
and contents to the nearest 1g (m2).
6.0 Remove the lid and place the container and contents in the oven and dry at 105°C to
110°C. The period required for drying will vary with the type of soil, the size of sample
‘and the number of samples in the oven but the sample shall be deemed to be dry when
the differences in successive weighing of the cooled sample at intervals of 4h do not
exceed 0.1% of the original mass of the soil. Do not replace the lid while the sample is in
the oven.

6.1 After drying, replace the lid and allow the whole to coo
6.2 Weigh the container and contents to the nearest 1g (ma).
6.3 Calculations and expression of results,
Calculate the moisture of the soil specimen, w as a percentage of the dry soil mass to the
nearest 0.1%, from the equation:
W= (mz—Mms/m3—m;) 100
Where
'm, is the mass of container (in g)
mais the mass of container and wet soil (in g)
‘mais the mass of cont
ier and dry soll (in g)
6.0 INTERGRITY OF DATA
6.1 All calculation and initial observations must be recorded in the Draft Report (Attachment
