A. Preparatory Activities
1. Drill
Play some riddles/ mind games.
2. Review
Ask a student to summarize the previous lesson. (Literary Devices)

Present some symbolic images to discuss briefly.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation of New Lesson
What is the function of literary criticism?
The function of literary criticism is to examine the merits and demerits or defects of a work of art and finally to evaluate its worth. The
chief function of criticism is to enlighten and stimulate.
There are many functions of literary criticism, and they vary depending on the text itself or the context where it is being
performed. Literary criticism may be the simple review of books that you often read online or in local newspapers, or a systematic
theoretical discussion of a story’s impact on society.
Which is at the root of all criticism?
At the root of all criticism is informed outside knowledge. Literary criticism depends on all phases of literary understanding,
including keen emphasis on the evaluation of the work itself and a strong understanding of the life and times of the author.
2. Discussion of Examples
Present a summary of “The World is an Apple” by Albert S. Florentino as an example.
3. Comparison and Abstraction/ Aesthetic Discussion
Compare and contrast previous lesson to present. Ask students with these questions:
a) What do you think is the moral of the story?
b) If you were the father (parent) given with the same problem, would you do the same?
c) Why do you think the author compares the world into an apple?
d) Give other literary works that has symbolism.
e) Is literary criticism different from literary device? Why?

C. Concluding Activities
1. Generalization
Ask students with these questions:
a) Are there literary devices found from the story? What are those? Cite some examples.
b) Given the chance to change the title, will you change it? Why or why not?
c) How does criticism help us understand the selection?
2. Application
Think pair share. Its time for you to express words with symbolism. Use the words provided below and write a short speech, song or
poetry about it.

Ask students with these questions:
a) What do you think the author from the selection wants to emphasize?
b) How powerful is literary criticism?

1. Search and read the poem “Gabu” by Carlos Angeles. Then create your own literary criticism of the said poem.
2. List some types of at least 5 literary devices provided with one example each found in the poem.
