The Role of HRM and Organisational Development in Toyota


Assignment title Motor Corporation.
Purpose of this assignment:
The aim of the unit is to enable students to understand and be able to apply principles of effective HRM
in order to enhance sustainable organisational performance and contribute to organisational success,
holding business outcomes and people outcomes in equal balance. Students will apply HR practices in
a work-related context, utilising their knowledge and practising skills and behaviours in relevant
professional areas, including resourcing, talent planning and recruitment, learning and development
and employee engagement.

Scenario
You just joined as an intern for Human Resource department in Toyota Motor Corporation. To get to
know the business, your department manager has asked you to explore the tools and techniques used
in HRM to maximise the employee contribution and how HR methods are used in the company to gain
competitive advantages. The manager has also asked you to investigate the importance of good
employee relations and the ways in which employers engage with their staff and possibly with trade
unions.

Role
As a Human Resources Intern, it is your job to understand HRM practices and to provide information
accurately and in a timely way to the appropriate stakeholders.
Your typical duties involve:

 liaising with a range of people involved in policy areas such as staff performance and health
and safety
 recruiting staff, which involves developing job descriptions and person specifications, preparing
job adverts, checking application forms, shortlisting, interviewing and selecting candidates
 making sure that prospective staff have the right to work at the organisation
 developing and implementing policies on issues such as working conditions, performance
management, equal opportunities, disciplinary procedures and absence management
 preparing staff handbooks

Introduction

Toyota Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in


Toyota, Aichi, Japan. As of December 2019, was the tenth-largest company in the world by revenue.
Toyota is the second largest automobile manufacturer in the world, behind Volkswagen, based on
2018-unit sales.
Toyota is the global market leader in sales of hybrid electric vehicles, and one of the largest
companies to encourage the mass-market adoption of hybrid vehicles across the globe. Toyota Motor
Corporation produces vehicles under five brands, including the Toyota brand, Hino, Lexus, Ranz, and
Daihatsu.

In your role as a Human Resources intern, one of your goals is to address the issues of skills shortage
and hard-to-fill vacancies in the organisation. You have been asked by your line manager to undertake
a review of HR practices and processes in order to produce a roadmap for successfully strengthening
the organisation’s talent management strategy. The review will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses
of HRM to critically evaluate factors that will contribute to decisions taken; it is to be delivered as a
presentation that gives a clear vision and roadmap to success. The priority objective is to improve
recruitment and employee engagement and motivation, and to grow internal talent.

Step by Step Instructions: -

The individual report will include the following:

Individual Report Format

The submission is in the form of an individual written report. This should be written in a concise, formal
business style using 1.5 spacing and font size 12. You are required to make use of headings,
paragraphs and subsections as appropriate, and all work must be supported with research and
referenced using the Harvard referencing system. Please also provide a bibliography using the Harvard
referencing system. The recommended word limit is 2000–2500 words, although you will not be
penalised for exceeding the total word limit.

LO3 - Examine how external and internal factors can affect HRM decision making in relation to
organisational development
TASK 2 – Holistic Task (Date of Submission – 28 March 2023)

Assessment Method: Written Report

In addition to this, you are to produce an evaluation summary on how external and internal factors can
affect HRM decision making in relations to organisational development. You will be reviewing internal
HRM practices and processes, with a focus on recruitment and selection, and external influences on
HRM practices, in order to determine HR solutions for strengthening the organisation’s talent
management strategy.

Step by Step instructions: -

1. Carry out an investigation into the internal and external factors that influence HRM decisions
in the workplace.
2. Discuss these factors using relevant organisational examples to illustrate how they support
organisational development in Toyota Motor Corporation.
3. Evaluate the key factors that affecting HRM decision making in the workplace to make a
valid recommendation. Use a variety of organisational examples to support valid
recommendations and considerations.

Assessment Method: Individual Portfolio

While working as an intern in the Human Resources (HR) department in Toyota Motor Corporation, you
have been asked to take part in testing the new recruitment and selection process. You will work in a
small team (3 members) to design a job specification for a particular job role and then you will take part
in an interview simulation for a job role advertised by another team.
The aim of your team is to test the recruitment and selection process and each complete an individual
document portfolio to submit. The document portfolio should include:

1. The design of a job specification for one of a number of given positions in the organisation.
2. A CV for each student, tailored to apply for one of the positions advertised by another team.
3. Documentation of preparatory notes for interviews, interview notes based on selection criteria
and a justified decision of the candidate selected.
4. A job offers to the selected candidate.
5. An evaluation of the process and the rationale for conducting appropriate HR practices.
6. An evaluation on strengths and weakness of HRM practices, with recommendations of how the
practices illustrated can improve sustainable organisational performance.
