Conductors and Insulators Lab Simulation

Learning target: I can use the simulation to test which objects are conductors and
insulators.

1. Go to the link Circuit Construction Kit: DC (colorado.edu)

2. Go to INTRO

3. Use the down arrow on the toolbar on the left side of the simulation to find
the objects to test. Create a circuit using 1 battery, wires, and 1 bulb, and 1
object. Fill in the table below, the first one is done for you.

Object Does bulb light? Yes or No Conductor or Insulator

Paper Clip Yes Conductor

Dollar bill YES CONDUCTOR

Fuse NO INSULATOR

Coin NO INSULATOR

Eraser YES CONDUCTOR

Pencil NO INSULATOR

Hand NO INSULATOR

Dog NO INSULATOR

What type of material is most likely a conductor? Wood or Metal? Explain your
thinking. Use the information from your table to help you answer the question.

Most metals are considered to be good conductors of electrical current. Copper is

just one of the more popular materials that is used for conductors. Other
materials that are sometimes used as conductors are silver, gold, and aluminum

Do you think a piece of paper would be a conductor or insulator? Explain your

thinking. Insulator pure cellulose having outstanding electrical properties
People who work with electricity wear protective gear like gloves. Do you think
they should wear gloves made of metal or rubber? Explain your thinking.
Wearing gloves with a good grip is important when you need excellent control
over slippery metals. So its rubber

Look around your house. Try to find 3 objects that would most likely be conductors
and insulators. Fill in your response in the table below.

Conductors around the house Insulators around the house

Copper Wood

Aluminum Plastic

Gold Glass

Predict and record results of changed components in an electrical

circuit

1.Label the diagram of a simple circuit

lightbulb
Battery

wire
2.Study the diagram below

a)State which of the circuit is a closed circuit

the second

b) Explain what happen when switch is pushed downwards in second circuit.

The light will be closed and will be no energy in the lightbulb

3.Study the 2 circuit below.

Find out the difference between circuit 1 and circuit 2

The first circuit is a Conductors Materials that allow electricity to flow through them
easily.

The second circuit is a Insulators Materials that do not allow electricity to pass
through them.
