LEARNING DESCRIPTION

Students, in communicating with others we need some expressions to make them intensively
involve to us. When we are about to say something or give certain information, we need other
people to pay attention to us. Then, after saying something or giving certain information, we
need to know if we are understood. So we need to check other people’s understanding by using
certain expression.
Sometimes we also need or want to tell what we think about something. We may also want to
know other people’s opinion about something. To do so, we use some expressions to give and
ask opinion.
To maintain good relationship with other people, we need to give them appreciation of their
achievement, appearance, help or kindness.
Have you been familiar with the expressions of getting attention, checking understanding,
showing appreciation and asking and giving opinion?

CONCEPT MAP
LEARNING DESCRIPTION
Can you dance? Can you sing? Can you play traditional instrument? If you can, will you
perform on stage when your school have a celebration?
Have you ever beeb asked such questions?. They ask whether we are able to do
something or not. They also often ask if we are willing to do something.
On the other hand, we also often tell people about our ability. Telling about our ability is
sometimes important to build our confidence. Sometimes we have plans or willingness to do
something in accordance with our capability. For example, as we can dance then we will
perform on our school anniversary’s celebration.
In this chapter we are going to discuss about how to state ability/inability and
willingness/unwillingness and also to ask people about it.
THEORITICAL REVIEW
1. LEARNING MATERIAL
a. Ability/ Inability
Ability means the capacity of being able to do something.
To state ability, we use modal “can/ could” or “be able”
Stating ability
Example:
The students can play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’.
Siti can cook ‘mie ongklok’.
Father and I can swim very well.
Example:
Mother could run very fast when she was young.
The police could arrest the criminal yesterday.
“Be able to” can be used to state ability at present or in the past depending on the ‘to be’
The formula is:
Example:
The students are able to play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’.
Siti is able to cook ‘mie ongklok’.
Father and I are able to swim very well.
Mother was able to run very fast when she was young.
The police were able to arrest the criminal.
Stating inability
Example:
The students cannot play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’.
Siti cannot cook ‘mie ongklok’.
Father and I cannot swim very well.
Mother could not run very fast when she was young.
The police could not arrest the criminal yesterday.
Example:
The students are not able to play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’.
Siti is not able to cook ‘mie ongklok’.
Father and I are not able to swim very well.
Mother was not able to run very fast when she was young.
The police were not able to arrest the criminal yesterday.
Example:
Can the students play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’?
Can Siti cook ‘mie ongklok’?
Could you swim very well?
In interrogative sentence, “could” is used to ask for ability politely or in formal situation.
Example:
Are the students able to play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’?
Is Siti able to cook ‘mie ongklok’.
Are youI able to swim very well.
Was mother able to run very fast when she was young.
Were the police able to arrest the criminal yesterday?
b. Willingness/ Unwillingness
Wiilingness indicates someone’s will to do something.
To state willingness, we use modal “will/ would”
“Will” is used for present while “would” is used for past. In interrogative sentence “would”
is also used to ask about willingness politely or in more formal situation.
Stating willingness
Stating unwillingness
Examples:
I will not come to your birthday party.
They would not visit their teacher.
.
DIALOG EXAMPLES:
a. Stating and asking about ability
Haryo : Hi, Dewa.
Dewa : Hello, Andy.
Haryo : Can you make a digital poster?
Dewa : No, I can’t. I cannot make a digital poster. But I can draw quite well.
How about you?
Haryo : I cannot draw and cannot make digital poster.
I want to make a poster of our school bazaar. Can you help?

CONCEPT MAP
LEARNING DESCRIPTION
https://widayati.com/expressions-of-obligation-necessity-contoh-ungkapan-dan-dialog-keharusan/
Has your friends ever told you about their problem? What do you do then? You may just
keep silent and become a good listener for them. Or maybe you give them advices to overcome
their problem. When the problem is really serious and you are afraid that it will give them a bad
impact, it is necessary for you to force them to do or stop doing something.
How do you express all those things? Let’s learn this chapter. It’s about expressing
obligation, prohibition and suggestion.
THEORITICAL REVIEW
1. LEARNING MATERIAL
a. Obligation
According to Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries, obligation is:
● the state of being forced to do something because it is your duty or because of a law
to, etc.
● something which you must do because you have promised, because of a law, etc”
Structure
Example :
We must wear a uniform every day.
You must speak louder. I can’t hear you.
Example :
I have to go to school at seven o’clock.
We have to show ID card.
Example:
Must we wear a uniform everyday?
Must I speak louder?
Example:
Do I have to go to school at seven o’clock?
Do we have to show ID card?
b. Prohibition
According to Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries, prohibition is:
● the act of stopping something being done or used, especially by law
● a law or rule that stops something being done or used”
Example:
You must not borrow more than four books at a time.
We must not be late to school.
Example:
Don’t run in the corridor.
Don’t sit on the bench.
Other forms of prohibition use: “prohibited/forbidden” (dilarang) and “not allowed/ not
permitted” (tidak diijinkan/tidak diperbolehkan) followed by “to infinitive/to Verb”.
Example:
c. Suggestion/Recommendation
According to Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries, suggestion is an idea or a plan that you
mention for somebody else to think about.
Example:
You should tell him what you think.
We should clean up the garden.
To ask for suggestion, put the modal verb at the beginning of the sentence:
Example:
Should I tell him what I think?
Should we clean up the garden?
Examples:
I would like to suggest you that you take an online course.
It’s better for you to go to the dentist.
My advice is you talk to your parent.
My suggestion is you exercise regularly.
If I were you, I would go by train.
You had better go there once a week.
Why don’t you save your money?
How about having lunch at home?
I advise you to eat more vegetables.
Try to do the task yourself.
You ought to sleep early.
DIALOG EXAMPLE:
Obligation, prohibition and suggestion can also be found in the form of notice in public
places.

Hi, My name is Handy. I want to describe briefly a building I have visited recently.
The most incredible thing about the building is the shape. It’s in the shape of a
giant turtle. I love the shape of the building. It’s so realistic. To enter the
building, visitors have to pay Rp. 17, 500 for adults and Rp. 12,500 for
children.
Inside the building, we are able to enjoy facilities, such as a giant aquarium
with sharks, turtles and various fish in it, educational games, and 3-dimensions
film booth. I also like the aquarium seemed so close to the visitors. However, I
don’t like the educational game section because almost all the games doesn’t
work. The officer in the room was not helpful at all. He just sat in his chair and
did nothing. Even worse, he was smoking, although there was a “No Smoking” sign
in the area.

Have you ever had a birthday party? How did you invite your friends to celebrate the
birthday with you? What did you say to them?
Do you know the appropriate expression to invite someone? We use the expression to
ask someone to come or join the event. We can invite our friends, or family members to come to
our birthday party.
In this chapter, we will learn about inviting, giving instruction and asking permission. Let’s
learn together.
THEORITICAL REVIEW
1. LEARNING MATERIAL
a. Giving Instruction/ Command and Prohibition
Instruction is the expression to give order or command to other people. It is also known
as the Imperative Form.
Giving instruction
To make instructions, we begin the sentence with a verb and end with an object, a
person or a thing.
Exampls:
Bring the books!
Open the door!
If the sentence do not use any verb, the structure will be:
Example:
Be brave!
Be polite!
Example:
Don’t eat my cake!
Don’t litter!
Example:
Don’t be pessimistic.
Don’t be lazy!
Structure Example
Please + instructions/command Please call me later.
Please be active.
Could + you + instructions/commands Could you send this message to Mom?
Could you be patient?
Do + you + mind + V-ing + Object Do you mind passing me the salt?.
Do you mind being punctual?
Would + you + mind + V-ing + Object Would you mind reminding me to call
Sarah?
Responding to instruction
Example:
Father : Hi, son. What are you doing here?
Son : Mom asked me to help you painting the wall, dad.
Father : OK, good. Take the brush in the tool box!
Son : All right, Dad.
Father : Stir the paint. Be careful. Don’t spill it.
Son : Sure.
b. Inviting
Inviting
Some expressions commonly used to invite someone are:
Expression Example
Would you like to . . . Would you like to see the parade with me?
Responding to invitation
Accepting instruction Refusing instruction
Sure. Thank you. I’m afraid I can’t.
Yes, certainly I will. I’m sorry, but I can’t.
I'd love to. Thank you. I’d love to but I’m very tired. Let’s do it tomorrow.
Yes, of course. (Put the reason of our refusal)
My pleasure.
Definitely yes.
That would be nice.
I would be delighted.
Sure, no problem.
Good idea. Let’s go.
Example:
Radit : I’m hungy.
Beni : Me too.
Radit : Let's have lunch! Would you like to have lunch with us, Raya?
Beni : Yeah, it will be fun if you can join us.
Raya : That's very kind of you both, but I have to go home soon. My mom is going to
take me to the dentist.
Radit : All right, then. Maybe you can join us next time.
Raya : Yeah. Thanks.
Expression Example
Would you allow me to … Would you allow me to leave the meeting?
Would you mind if I … Would you mind if I give my opinion?
Do you mind if I … Do you mind if I join you ?
Would it be all right if I … Would it be all right if I come to your house?
Is it okay if I … Is it okay if I call you very early in the morning?
May I … May I use your umbrella?
Can I … Can I have the candy?
When someone is asking for our permission, we may either give it or not.
Both should be expressed politely. It is better for us to give a reason especially when we
refuse to give permission.
Example:
Didi : Do you mind if I use your phone for a minute? Mine is off. I need to call my
mom.
Wawan : Sure, I don’t mind. Here is the phone.
Didi : Thanks. It will just take a minute or two.
Wawan : Take your time. No rush.
Didik : Thanks a lot, Wawan.
2. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Mr. Yudi : Some students please put the chairs on the tables. Some others please
sweep the floor and mop it as clean as possible. And the rest please
clean the window.
Students : Yes, Sir.

his friends or family and he took no mobile phone at all. Later, there was a terrible accident. An
enormous rock trapped Aron\'s arm. He was there for six days. He could not sleep at night because it
was very cold. He did not drink any fresh water, and there was not any food to eat. Besides, he did not
see any people. Fortunately, Aron was safe. On the sixth day he escaped. He amputated his trapped arm

AKM
Once a fisherman named Batara Guru Sahala lived in Batakland. One day, he caught a
fish. To his surprise, he found that the fish could talk! It begged Sahala to set it free.
Sahala did accordingly.
As soon as the fish was free, it changed into a woman. She was so beautiful that the
fisherman fell in love with her at once. He asked her to marry him. The woman agreed
to marry Sahala. However, she told him that he must never let out the secret that she
was once a fish. Sahala promised her that he would not tell anyone about it. They were
happily married, and had two daughters. Every morning, Sahala went out fishing. His
daughters would bring him his lunch. One day, however, instead of bringing the food to
their father, the girls ate it. When Sahala learnt what they had done with his meal, he got
very angry. He shouted at them, saying, \"You behaved exactly like the daughters of a
fish.\"
The girls did not understand what their father meant. They went home and asked their
mother about it. When they told her what he had said, she was very annoyed. Although
