LEARNING DESCRIPTION
https://www.cuemath.com/learn/parenting/intercultural-communication/

Students, in communicating with others we need some expressions to make them intensively
involve to us. When we are about to say something or give certain information, we need other
people to pay attention to us. Then, after saying something or giving certain information, we
need to know if we are understood. So we need to check other people’s understanding by using
certain expression.

Sometimes we also need or want to tell what we think about something. We may also want to
know other people’s opinion about something. To do so, we use some expressions to give and
ask opinion.

To maintain good relationship with other people, we need to give them appreciation of their
achievement, appearance, help or kindness.

Have you been familiar with the expressions of getting attention, checking understanding,
showing appreciation and asking and giving opinion?
In this chapter we will discuss about it.

CONCEPT MAP

LEARNING DESCRIPTION

Can you dance? Can you sing? Can you play traditional instrument? If you can, will you
perform on stage when your school have a celebration?
Have you ever beeb asked such questions?. They ask whether we are able to do
something or not. They also often ask if we are willing to do something.
On the other hand, we also often tell people about our ability. Telling about our ability is
sometimes important to build our confidence. Sometimes we have plans or willingness to do
something in accordance with our capability. For example, as we can dance then we will
perform on our school anniversary’s celebration.
In this chapter we are going to discuss about how to state ability/inability and
willingness/unwillingness and also to ask people about it.

THEORITICAL REVIEW

1. LEARNING MATERIAL
a. Ability/ Inability
Ability means the capacity of being able to do something.
To state ability, we use modal “can/ could” or “be able”

Stating ability

“Can” is used to state ability at present.

The structure is:

Example:
The students can play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’.
Siti can cook ‘mie ongklok’.
Father and I can swim very well.

“Could” is used to state ability in the past.

The structure is:

Example:
Mother could run very fast when she was young.
The police could arrest the criminal yesterday.

“Be able to” can be used to state ability at present or in the past depending on the ‘to be’
The formula is:

Example:
The students are able to play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’.
Siti is able to cook ‘mie ongklok’.
Father and I are able to swim very well.
Mother was able to run very fast when she was young.
The police were able to arrest the criminal.

Stating inability
Example:
The students cannot play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’.
Siti cannot cook ‘mie ongklok’.
Father and I cannot swim very well.

The police could not arrest the criminal yesterday.

Example:
The students are not able to play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’.
Siti is not able to cook ‘mie ongklok’.
Father and I are not able to swim very well.
Mother was not able to run very fast when she was young.
The police were not able to arrest the criminal yesterday.

Asking about ability

Example:
Can the students play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’?
Can Siti cook ‘mie ongklok’?
Could you swim very well?

In interrogative sentence, “could” is used to ask for ability politely or in formal situation.

Example:
Are the students able to play traditional instrument ‘bundengan’?
Is Siti able to cook ‘mie ongklok’.
Are youI able to swim very well.
Was mother able to run very fast when she was young.
Were the police able to arrest the criminal yesterday?

b. Willingness/ Unwillingness
Wiilingness indicates someone’s will to do something.
To state willingness, we use modal “will/ would”
“Will” is used for present while “would” is used for past. In interrogative sentence “would”
is also used to ask about willingness politely or in more formal situation.

Stating willingness

The structure is:

Examples:
I will come to your birthday party.
They would visit their teacher.

Examples:
I will not come to your birthday party.
They would not visit their teacher.
.

To express about obligation, we use modal verb ‘must’ or ‘have to’.

Structure

Example :
We must wear a uniform every day.
You must speak louder. I can’t hear you.
Example :
I have to go to school at seven o’clock.
We have to show ID card.

To ask about obligation, use the following structure:

Example:
Must we wear a uniform everyday?
Must I speak louder?

Example:

b. Prohibition
According to Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries, prohibition is:
● the act of stopping something being done or used, especially by law
● a law or rule that stops something being done or used”

To express prohibition, we can use:

Example:
You must not borrow more than four books at a time.
We must not be late to school.

Example:
Don’t run in the corridor.
Don’t sit on the bench.

Other forms of prohibition use: “prohibited/forbidden” (dilarang) and “not allowed/ not
permitted” (tidak diijinkan/tidak diperbolehkan) followed by “to infinitive/to Verb”.

Example:

It is probihited to sleep in the morning.

It is forbidden to pass through the street.
You are not allowed to get into the room.
You are not permitted to eat while studying in the class.

mention for somebody else to think about.

● What do you suggest?
● Do you have any suggestions?
● What should I do?

● Please tell me what to do.

To make suggestion we use modal verb ‘should’.

Example:
You should tell him what you think.
We should clean up the garden.

To ask for suggestion, put the modal verb at the beginning of the sentence:

Example:
Should I tell him what I think?
Should we clean up the garden?

● I would like to suggest you that …

● It’s better for you to …
● My advice is …
● My suggestion is …
● If I were you, I would + verb 1
● You had better + verb 1
● Why don’t you + verb 1 … ?

You had better go there once a week.
Why don’t you save your money?

I advise you to eat more vegetables.
Try to do the task yourself.
You ought to sleep early.

a. Giving Instruction/ Command and Prohibition

Instruction is the expression to give order or command to other people. It is also known

Sarah?

All right, Ma’am/Sir I’m sorry, but I can’t.
Sure, no problem.

Son : All right, Dad.
Father : Stir the paint. Be careful. Don’t spill it.

b. Inviting

What is meant by invitation here is a spoken request to somebody to do something or to

go somewhere.

Inviting
Some expressions commonly used to invite someone are:

Expression Example
Would you like to . . . Would you like to see the parade with me?

Would/Will you …. Would you go with me this afternoon?

I would like to invite you to . . . I would like to invite you to the opening of our school

take me to the dentist.
Radit : All right, then. Maybe you can join us next time.
Raya : Yeah. Thanks.

c. Asking and Giving Permission

When we want to do something or perhaps want to use or take other’s belonging, we

have to ask for permission.
Permission is the act of allowing somebody to do something, especially when this is
done by somebody in a position of authority.

To ask for permission, we may use one of the following expressions:

Expression Example
Would you allow me to … Would you allow me to leave the meeting?
Would you mind if I … Would you mind if I give my opinion?
Do you mind if I … Do you mind if I join you ?
Would it be all right if I … Would it be all right if I come to your house?
Is it okay if I … Is it okay if I call you very early in the morning?
May I … May I use your umbrella?
Can I … Can I have the candy?

When someone is asking for our permission, we may either give it or not.
Both should be expressed politely. It is better for us to give a reason especially when we
refuse to give permission.

Giving permission Refusing permission

Sure, I don’t mind. Sorry, I’m using it now.
Sure, you may. I’m sorry but that’s not possible.
Sure, go ahead. I’m afraid you can’t.
All right. I don’t think that’s possible.
Yes, of course. I don’t think so.
Yes please do. No, you may not.
No problem.
Please feel free.

Example:
Didi : Do you mind if I use your phone for a minute? Mine is off. I need to call my
mom.
Wawan : Sure, I don’t mind. Here is the phone.
Didi : Thanks. It will just take a minute or two.

Degrees of Comparison

Comparison can be made using the three forms of the adjective. Comparison can be classified
into three degrees, they are positive, comparative and superlative.

1. The Positive Degree

This offers no comparison. It just tells us about the existence of a quality.
The formula of positive degree: as + positive + as

Example :

Mathematics exam is as easy as English

Lion is as strong as Leopard
My younger brother is as tall as I am
Your attitude is as cold as ice

2. The Comparative Degree

The comparative degree is used to compare the qualities of two persons, animals or
things. The comparative degree denotes the existence of higher degree of the quality than the
positive. This compares two things to show which has the lesser or greater degree of the quality.
For example:

The formula of comparative degree: comparative + than

3. The Superlative Degree

more persons, animals and things.

The Best Day
I'm five years old, it's getting cold; I've got my big coat on
I hear your laugh and look up smiling at you, I run and run
Past the pumpkin patch and the tractor rides
Look now, the sky is gold
I hug your legs and fall asleep on the way home
I don't know why all the trees change in the fall
I know you're not scared of anything at all
Don't know if Snow White's house is near or far away
But I know I had the best day with you today
I'm 13 now and don't know how my friends could be so mean
I come home crying and you hold me tight and grab the keys
And we drive and drive until we've found a town far enough away
And we talk and window shop 'til I forgot all their names
