WEPP - Development Position 2023
The Warren Educational Policies Program (WEPP) of AIPG is expanding its capacity to develop
knowledge and experience to effectively integrate educational policies and programming into
broader governmental strategies for the prevention of mass atrocities, contributing to the
building of educational systems that are more resilient to atrocity crimes.
The Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG) is
building a world that prevents genocide and other mass atrocities. Through education, training,
and technical assistance, we support States to develop or strengthen policies and practices for
the prevention of genocide and other mass atrocities. We also encourage and support
the cooperation of States through regional and international networks to advance prevention.
In accordance with our commitment to fundamental and universal human rights, the Auschwitz
Institute embraces diversity and equity and actively seeks to foster an inclusive work
environment across our five global offices. We are a small NGO with a large impact, working in
over 90 countries around the world. As our organization grows, we strive for our team to
reflect the diversity of communities we serve, and we especially welcome applications from
candidates from communities that have been underrepresented in the field of genocide and
mass atrocity prevention.
AIPG believes that atrocity prevention is not crisis management, but a much broader,
longer-term project that involves the identification of the risks that exist within any society and
the strengthening and implementation of policies and institutions that reduce those risks.
Expanding on this premise, for the past six years, the Warren Educational Polices Program
(WEPP) of AIPG has built knowledge and capacity to effectively integrate educational policies
and programming into broader governmental strategies for the prevention of mass atrocities,
looking precisely at how to ensure younger generations uphold human rights and democratic
values in challenging social contexts.
Since its creation, the WEPP has implemented two national-level programs in Brazil and El
Salvador, using an innovative, bottom-up strategy to develop educational projects and policies
that respond directly to relevant local needs. In Brazil, WEPP created a curricular framework
and pedagogy to open spaces for dialogue, based on the recognition of diversity, within public
education classrooms. Piloted in 2018, the project is operating in fifteen states around the
country. The program in Brazil has trained roughly 2,400 teachers and has reached more than
72,000 students through implementation of the curriculum in schools. In El Salvador, WEPP
produced a toolkit designed to build teachers' capacity to effectively teach the legacy of the
country’s civil war, while nurturing a culture of peace. This material is currently included in the
country's standard educational curriculum. In 2022, the WEPP organized an international
conference, Democratic Education Needs Imagination, which gathered around 30
stakeholders from all over the world to (re)imagine how school-based practices and policies
can contribute to more respectful, inclusive, and resilient societies as response to the global
rise of hate speech, identity-based violence, and democratic backsliding since the 2008 crisis.
