My Topology Portfolio 2

1. The document is a topology portfolio containing definitions, examples, and explanations of topological concepts covered during January and February 2023. 2. The first section defines and provides examples of connected spaces, including that a connected space cannot be separated into disjoint open sets. 3. Subsequent sections cover examples of compactness, including the definition that a space is compact if every open covering contains a finite subcover.

Connected Space

✓ A connected space is one that cannot be Month

separated into the union of two disjoint
nonempty open sets. Otherwise such a pair

of open sets is called a separation of X .

Connectedness is a topological property:

Jan
any two homeomorphic topological spaces
1st -3rd week
are either both connected, or both
disconnected, and the same set can be
connected in one topology but disconnected
in another, for example, R and 𝑅𝑙 . Definition of Connected Space

Example 1
✓ If a set is connected in a finer topology then
it is connected in a coarser topology.
Example 2

✓ A space is connected iff the only sets that Example 3

are both open and closed in it are the whole

space and the empty set.

Compactness

✓ A collection A of subsets of a space X is said to cover

Month
X, or to be a covering of X, if the union of the elements
of A is equal to X. It is called an open covering of X if
its elements are open subsets of X.
✓ A space X is said to be compact if every open covering
Jan
A of X contains a finite sub-collection that also covers 4th week
X.
