The Portuguese butler1 of Downton Abbey

Luís Coelho is Portuguese and he is “the real life butler” of Highclere
Castle, near London, where the series Downton Abbey is set. Let’s learn
more about him!

Interviewer: So, Luís, what is your job at Highclere castle?

5 Luís: Well, I’m the house manager. I manage all the staff and make sure everything is just as
the lords of the house, the Earl and Duchess of Carnarvon, want.
Interviewer: Tell us a bit about your day...
Luís: I wake up at 4.30 a.m. from Monday to Saturday... On Sundays I don’t work! It’s my day
off! After that I have breakfast. Then I meet all the staff in the kitchen. Some of them are
10 responsible for the laundry, others for the cooking, the cleaning of the rooms... At midday
lunch is served. I’m always in the main dining room at lunchtime. In the afternoon, I have a
rest from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and then I help serve dinner at 6.30 p.m. I usually serve a cup of tea
in the main hall right before bedtime, which is usually at 11.
Interviewer: But the castle has 300 rooms. How do you manage all that?

15 Luís: It’s easy...There are more than 100 servants and we all work as a team! This includes
gardeners, household staff, tour guides, electricians, dog walkers, carpenters, etc.
Interviewer: What happens when they start filming the series Downton Abbey? It’s just
happening...
Luís: There are cameras everywhere, so we don’t have access to all the rooms. We have to

20 reschedule the meals, the cleaning and even the rest times... But it’s great fun to live that
Hollywood atmosphere and getting to know famous actors and actresses is amazing. I love
Portugal and I miss my family, but I really feel at home here!
