I.BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A student’s career choice is one of the most significant problems and
obstacles that they face during their academic career. It entails the exchange of a
large number of intricately intertwined components. According to Nyamwage
(2016), a student’s current circumstance, gifts, abilities, and scholarly
achievements all influence career choice. It is not an easy task; it entails a lengthy
decision-making process, students must consider a variety of factors, particularly
during this pandemic period, which causes them to second guess their choices. In
the event of a poor choice, disappointment and frustration are likely to follow.
According to research, a student’s career choice is influenced by financial
considerations, as they must pay for family expenses. Many students have found
that factors like fitness, life circumstances, and academic achievement all play a
role in career choices (Kazl, A.S., and Akhlag, A. 2017). Student’s career choices
will impact the remainder of their lives. Students career choices were influenced
by their grades, ages, personal interests, and experiences that these students
determined what they wanted to accomplish and their future careers (Quinter et
al; 2011). Senior high school students also said that their decisions were
influenced by factor like decision-making, motivation, peer pressure, institutional
concerns, and future job prospects, among other things.
Senior High school students choose their future career for many
reason. And the factors that affect this decision include family, passion, salary,
and past experiences. In addition to these factors, race and gender can also can
also affect what field a student may choose. Some professions have greater
percentages of a certain gender or race. Another thing that play a big role in a

4|Page
student’s decision on what field to study is the people or role models in his or her
life. These role models can include a parent, teacher, or a recent employer.
And as of now, another factor that affect a student’s career choice is the
latest program of education or more specifically the K-12 Program that has been
established by the Department of Education(DepEd), this K-12 program according
to the research of Enderun Colleges is said to promote global competency by
accelerating mutual recognition of Filipino graduates and professionals in other
countries. This new curriculum allows students to choose between three tracks
which are the Academic, Technical-Vocational-Livelihood, and the Sports and Arts
Strand. This program granted two more years for High school students in order
for them to hone themselves more for the choosing of their future career and it
also allowed them to have more choices in choosing their future career thus
making the K-12 program another factor for a student’s career choosing and
factor for us researchers to find out on.
When students are choosing a career, they may not have all the
information about the job they are pursuing. The job may involve more math and
science than students are prepared to study. Students may like one aspects of a
certain job and not understand what other aspects come with that profession. For
example, some students may want to be veterinarians because they enjoy being
around animals, but students may not realize how much school works it takes to
be a veterinarian. Also students may not be open to all job in their area of
interest.
And though in this study we are trying to research the factors that affect a
student’s future career choosing but as paradoxical as it may be the careers
themselves can serve as factors for this study as well, depending on the jobs
difficulty, cost, and wage a student may be affected to think about these careers,
at the same time the rate of people that achieved success or failure in these
careers can impact a student in making the decision for their future careers
making them pursue the ones with higher chance of success and avoid the ones
that may end in failure.
Overtime certain job fields have peaked in numbers compared to other job
fields, this can form a pattern. Tools that can help students in their decision for
certain career paths include career fairs, job shadowing, or internships. These

5|Page
tools can expose students to more career fields or areas within a certain field that
a student didn’t know about.
Choosing a career path is a huge part of a student’s life. The career path
students choose will affect how they will live for the rest of their life. A lot of
students go through college without knowing what career path they want. Before
students can pick a career path they need to experience what that career is like
and what it involves.
And so we are here to find out the factors that affect the career choice of
grade 12 students of Balud National High School S.Y. 2022-2023 and by doing so
may help us shed more light in this problem and create a solution that may ease
this long time dilemma.

II.REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND
STUDIES
-FOREIGN LITERATURE
The word career has been a derivative of French and Latin
origin. According to Ahmed, Sharif and Ahmad (2017), career
defined as the occupational, commercial or industrial activity that
a person may adopt during his educational life or in some other
part or till his death. It also clarifies career as the application of a
person’s cognition and capabilities, providing command over
profession, timely work expertise and a basis of developing and
bettering business networks. Individuals chose career planning to
pursue the professional objectives, getting informed about
upcoming opportunities, their results and their timely evaluations.
According to Bandusa et.al (2001), Students all over the
world usually fared with the tasks of career decision making the
choice of careers, subjects and courses of study in school and of
subsequent paths to follow is always difficult problems facing
prospective under graduates. Often choosing the right subject
combination reading to the right profession can make the
difference between enjoying and detecting the career in the
future. Dedicating oneself to career choices that are unattainable

13 | P a g e
leads to frustration. Each individual undertaking the process is
influenced by many factors, including the context in which they
live their personal aptitudes, and educational attainment.
According to Khare (2015) that role models influence
adolescents career choice. “If a student has a good teacher who
makes an impression or a family member who is a pharmacist or
a carpenter she took up to, she may decide on the same career”
and such factors relate positively to desirable career development
outcomes such as career decision. Duffy and Dick (2009), as
cited by Quinter (2011) and Perronet. Al (2001) added, as cited by
Quinter (2011) that career decisiveness of college students is
influenced by the role model supportiveness and the qualities of
relationship they have.
John L. Holland, as cited by Staunt (2015), claimed that both
people work environment can be categorized and then matched
to each other. Holland’s theory aims to categorized people
according to what type of work they are most interested in and
then categorized occupations under the same scheme to
measure their congruence. In Holland’s words “people tend to act
on their dominant interest and seek occupations in which their
interest can be expressed.
Leong (2002:282) gets at the heart of the matter with
existing theories in his paper on cultural accommodations and
Asia which looks at universal elements which will be applicable
across all cultures such as job satisfaction” I am assuming the
very human being seeks satisfaction from his or her work; it is
correlates, their meaning and sources of satisfaction, that are
likely to vary across cultures. “It is “based on the underlying
premise that career choice is an expression of one’s personalities
and similar histories.” (Swanson & Fraud 1999:64).

14 | P a g e
According to Fizer (2013), Choosing the right career is
becoming more and more important for young students today and
preference of the student on the career to take in the future is
affected by other factors other than skills and personalities they
have(Pascual,2014).According to McQuiad and Bond, as cited by
Quinter (2011) that students perception of being suitable for
particular jobs also has been found to be influenced by a number
of factors including ethnic background, year in school, the level of
achievement, choice of science subjects, attitudes and
differences in job characteristics. And Quinter (2011) concluded
that the availability of advancement opportunities and learning
experiences are the most influential factors affecting career
choices. Furthermore, he contended that the learning experiences
and career flexibility influenced most males in their career choice
while for the females are the availability of advancement
opportunities and opportunity to apply skills.
Three main traits characterize the current concept of career
development interventions in the post-modern era. First career
interventions are conceived as being applied over the life span
(Super,1980). Second career development process is viewed an
including all the transitions that an individual experience: school,
job, and personal(Schlossberg,1984). Third clients are considered
to actors in their own career development.
Uyar, Gungormus and Kuzey (2011) revealed that 12 factors
affecting the decision of students including career opportunities,
interest in the subject, instructor, money, parents, enjoyment,
previous experience, lifestyle offered because of the career,
challenge, prestige, usefulness in operating a business, and other
students. It also discover the top 5 reasons for choosing a major
where: interest in a career associated with the major, good job
opportunities, abilities, a desire to run a business someday, and

15 | P a g e
projected earnings in the related career. The least selected
reasons for choosing a major were the reputation of the major at
the university, the perceived quality of instruction, the parents’
influence, the amount and type of promotional information, and
the influence of friends. Utilized factor analysis and determined
the following seven main factors in deciding career choice: high
earnings expectations, career expectations, job experience,
knowledge and ability, family environment, social status, and
education environment.
Therefore, students choose their course in college based on
their perceive exits. Students choose their courses in relation to
how productive a course is and if it needed in the industry. High
paying jobs too are also considered as a factor in choosing
courses. On the contrary, students also have a misconception
about the professions due to lack of information – it prevents from
choosing them.
-FOREIGN STUDIES
According to Kazl and Akhlag (2017), A Person’s own career
is an indispensable tool in one’s own life, it is needed for them to
continue their own daily life, and as such the period of one’s own
career choice holds great importance, their own decision will lead
them to the career they want, and the factors that exist around
that person will affect that decision.
According to Sharf (2002) “Career decision making is a
process that describes or explains the choices that a person
makes when selecting a particular career” and during this process
we can identify the different factors involved in one’s career
decision making and gives information on how these factors affect
a person’s decision to choose that one particular career.

16 | P a g e
According also to Beggs,et.al 2008, Financial aspects
that students consider includes high earning potential, benefit and
opportunities for advancement. According to Ferry (2006) further
asserts that adolescent occupational choice is influenced by many
factors including the context, personal aptitudes, and educational
attainment. He contends further that whether college-bound or
work-bound, meeting the challenge of this development milestone
is critical in adolescent’s life.
In the study of Wildman Torres (2002) “family and friends are
considered to be an influential part of the student’s choice of
major. Parents with an agriculture background most often have an
impact in where students go to college. Family role models have
more of an influence on what students major in. There are many
people in a students’ life who can influence their career decision.
Most of the time, parents and friends play a large role, but
coaches and teacher can also have a huge impact on a students’
life”.
Also in the study of Wildman Torres (2002) this talks about
economic stability it says that “Many students believe that to live a
comfortable lifestyle they need to be economically stable”. Almost
all students on the time of the career choosing think about how to
live a comfortable life and as such in choosing their career they
tend to pick the jobs with high salary or those with good security.
Shumba and Naong (2012) found out that the family is a
significant factor in determining children’s career choice, the
ability of the learner self to identify his preferred career choice,
and teachers influence career choice of their learners. These
findings are consistent with the findings of other studies that have
examined the influences of each parent on the career choices of
their sons or daughters and have found that mothers tend to have

17 | P a g e
more influence on the career decision and aspirations of their
children than fathers.
Similarly, Leppel, Williams and Waldauer (2001) revealed
that parental education, family income, and family head’s
occupational status were found to be positively associated with
offspring’s educational achievement. Rababah (2016) family
members and peers have an influence in the students’ choice of
the major including personal interests, gender, career opportunity
and availability of jobs are some of the factors that affect the
students’ decision making in this matter.
Su, Chang, Wu and Liao (2016) showed that students’
career decision-making is most deeply affected by “personal
factor”, next are “group factor” and “career exploration factor”, and
“school factor” has lowest affecting level to them. Students of
large-sized schools with taking household affairs courses who will
be easily affected by personal factor of career decision-making.
Soria and Stebleton (2013) studied the relationships
between students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivations with
choosing a major, satisfaction with educational experience, and
sense of belonging. Internal extrinsic motivations positively
associated with satisfaction include students’ motivation to
choose a major because the selected option allows time for other
activities, prepares students for a fulfilling career, prepares
students for graduate/ professional school, and provides
international opportunities. One internal extrinsic motivation—
choosing a major because it complements students’ desire to
study abroad—was negatively associated with students’
satisfaction. Additionally, students who had external extrinsic
motivations for choosing a major—because of denial of their first
choice of college major, easy requirements, and parental desires
for choice of major—are negatively associated with students’
18 | P a g e
satisfaction. All internal extrinsic motivations for selecting a major
are positively related to sense of belonging, except for choosing a
major because it leads to a high paying job, which is negatively
associated with students’ sense of belonging.
Hoai, Thi and Thanh (2016) in their study factors influencing
student’s choice of accounting as a major show that social norm
has a great influence on student’s choice of major including
advice and orientation of acquaintances, friends, teachers,
parents which had a significant influence on their decisions in the
selection of specific discipline. It also revealed some significant
differences between average level of male and female students
through perceptions of input scores, major pressure and suitability
for the people good at math, job availability, average income and
advancement opportunity.
-LOCAL LITERATURE
To enable studies, make good decisions and this ease
problem of jobs and skills mismatch, the Department of Labor and
Employment(DOLE) recently conducted orientations for guidance
counsellors on the new Standards Manual entitled; Career Guide
for High School Students and Employment Guide for College
Students and Jobseeker aimed at enhancing their capability on
Career and Employment coaching.
According to Moneva et.al (2019), The Grade 12 Senior High
School Students encountered the different factors that influence in
their selection of course which includes decision-making and
interest, peer influence, considerations about the institution and
future job opportunities. These factors gave an impact towards
the graduating learners in selecting a course in college. But much
with more importance to the considerations about the institution.
Institutional factors that influence students’ college decision

19 | P a g e
includes location, educational facilities, cost and employment
opportunities.
Malubay, Mercado & Macasaet (2015) noticed the primary
factor affecting the decision of freshmen students in taking up
specified courses or programs is the economic factors that
include economic stable wages and in-demand jobs.
In the context of the Filipino students by Manlo et.al. (2017)
suggests that career satisfaction indicates student’s agreement or
contentment with their selected track and strand or senior high
school career.
, According to Aguado, Laguador & Deligero (2015), That
some students may not have sufficient knowledge and
understanding about the right career to pursue. This might be
because, as stated by Pascual (2014), the problems being faced
by the students when they are trying to match their career choice
with their abilities and performance, especially on academics.
Recent studies show that every one in three college
graduates could not find employment requiring a college degree
(National Commission‟s website, 1989). The study also stated
that relevant work experience has given students an upper hand
in building a career. Experience rather than education seemed to
carry more value in some career choices. A statement from the
National Commission (2012) on Cooperative Education went on
to say that cooperative education combined educational, financial,
and career building opportunities. Pascual (2014) showed that the
students’ first consideration in choosing a course in college is the
availability of possible work.
In addition, Dagang and de Mesa (2017) identified the
results which point to the strong influence of parents on their
children choice of tertiary school. It is deeply rooted in the
20 | P a g e
consciousness of the Filipino people the respect for elders, hence
the strong influence of parents on children decision. In a Filipino
family children are financially dependent on their parents, hence
their submission to their parent’s decision, thus explaining the
moderate influence of others such as the peers, friends and
relatives. Another factors were affordability of tuition, followed by
scholarship.
Various factors can affect a student’s career preference for
senior high school as well as in college. According to Pascual
(2014) the influence of a student’s social environment or the
people who are around them, especially their parents, is one pf
the main factors that affect their career choice. Students often rely
on their parent’s advice in coming up with a decision because
they want to do well for the sake of their families. This is how
some students show respect and appreciation to their parents
since they are the ones that provide them financial support to
enter college. (Aguado, Laguador & Deligero 2015)
Likewise, according to Pascual (2014), Economic factors
such as employability and availability of job can influence the
decision of students in selecting a career. Students ensure that
jobs are available for them after they graduate from the career
they chose.
Overall, it can be noted that career decisions of students can
be influenced by different factors which they may include their
social and actual environment, the opportunities they receive and
the jobs they could get in the future.
-LOCAL STUDIES
In Baron et.al.(2017)’s study, In the course of choices of
course to read in the Senior Secondary Schools and universities,
a lot of influencing actions or decisions. These general
21 | P a g e
determinates of their choices at this crucial. Proceeds in
influences, peer groups, intellectual ability, financial background,
goal of life, come into play varying degrees of weight on them.
There are many problems which directly or indirectly influence the
Senior Secondary School.
According to Dela Torre et.al. (2019) they also stated that
The Grade 12 Senior High School Students encountered the
different factors that influence in their selection of course which
includes decision-making and interest, peer influence,
considerations about the institution and future job opportunities.
These factors gave an impact towards the graduating learners in
selecting a course in college. But much with more importance to
the considerations about the institution. Institutional factors that
influence students’ college decision includes location, educational
facilities, cost and employment opportunities.
In Nazareno et.al. (2020)’s study, Different factors were
shown to be related to the career choice of students. The impact
of most of these factors was proven to vary in their extent of
influence in choosing among different SHS tracks. Sex, age, birth
order, and monthly income have moderate associations with the
career track/strand choice. This study also confirms that
intellectual aptitudes are potential predictors of career choice. All
the grades in the core subjects have a moderate association with
a career track/strand choice. The intended course in college has
the strongest association with the chosen career track/strand,
which agrees that students regarded their preferences first in
selecting a career track in SHS. Besides personal preferences,
individuals in the students’ social circle influence their choice of a
career track in SHS. There is an association between the parent’s
educational attainment and occupation and the student’s choice
of a career track. School counselors have the lowest influence on

22 | P a g e
students’ career choices. Lastly, students also consider perceived
cost a relatively important factor related to track choice. They
choose SHS tracks offered in schools near their residence since it
is less costly and convenient for them and their families.
Nazareno et.al. also stated that Knowing the factors that
may influence students’ career track choice can be useful in
developing strategies that may assist them in making intelligent
decisions. Results indicate that students realize the role of SHS
education in preparing them for higher education. Higher
education institutions can be of great help in providing information
about the content and requirements of offered courses in college
through educational training and seminars, not only for students
but also for parents, so that students are well-guided about their
choice of career. Career orientation activities may promote
undersubscribed SHS tracks, especially Sports, and Arts and
Design. As the result suggests that school guidance counselors
have a low influence on career choice, it is essential to
strengthening their ties with students to guide them in career
decision making effectively. Moreover, as the socioeconomic
status may dictate the students’ career track choice, it is vital to
provide support to students who would like to pursue career
tracks/strands that require high financial resources. For instance,
scholarship programs targeting underprivileged students may be
offered.
According to Baron et.al. (2017), In making decisions, many
time people incorporate our interest, and we cannot deny the fact
that we go the decisions that we like. Interest was found as one
factor that affects students course choice. Indeed, the on factor
influence the student’s choices is the interest as they stated their
ilikes, passions and skills coincide with their current self–chosen
course.

23 | P a g e
. Also Baron et.al. (2017) stated that exploring things in
work, students decide their choice of career and of the reason;
they want to learn something out of their discovery, exploration
and curiosity. Students find their choice during their childhood a
framework to their future career. It serves as their guide to the
path they’ll pursue for their life.
According to Bacarisas et.al. (2014) study, they stated that
majority of the students would pursue a career in Engineering,
followed by Medicine, Business and other fields.
In addition, Bacarisas et.al. also stated that the students are
influenced by Personality, Interest, and Job opportunities factors
in choosing their track preference. Family/Relatives factors
somewhat influence the students in choosing their track
preference.
Also according to Bacarisas et.al. (2014), In the area of
personality factors, fitting the personality to career is the leading
factor. The same goes for awareness of the family support on the
area of family factors, particular interest on the career among
interest factors, and awareness of the opportunities surrounding
the chosen career among the factors regarding job opportunities.

III. METHODOLOGY
-RESEARCH DESIGN
In the Quantitative Research conducted by the Researchers
they made Questionnaires that utilized the descriptive survey
method to gather the data from the respondents that they have
selected in conducting their study.
-RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
The Researchers used Survey Questionnaire Checklist as
their Instrument for the study that they have selected. Through
this they gathered the needed data that they require for their
Research as well as to ensure that the Study will proceed in a
Quantitative way.

25 | P a g e
-DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
The Researchers first determined the number of
respondents that they need for the study through sampling, then
after obtaining permission from the teachers of the classroom of
the respondents they conducted a room to room survey, handling
out the Questionnaire checklist on a selected amount of students,
after doing so the Researchers started to tally and tabulate the
respondents answers on the Questionnaire checklist, it is then
that the Researchers start drawing out their conclusion.
-STATISCAL TREATMENT OF DATA

V.SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND

RECOMMENDATION
-SUMMARY
In this Research Paper the Researchers conducted the
study of discovering the FACTORS THAT AFFECT IN
CHOOSING FUTURE CAREER OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS OF
BALUD NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL S.Y. 2022-2023, Mainly, The
Researchers reason for selecting this title for their study is due to
the fact that they are also currently experiencing this factors and
they also made the conclusion that these might help them and
others in choosing their future career, with that choice made, the
Researchers conducted the first part of their study which is
33 | P a g e
determining it’s background through it they figured out that these
factors that affect a student’s career choice range mainly from the
students own desires, their skills and capabilities, their selected
idols or role models, their financial and social status, educational
attainment and the different careers availability and it’s given
opportunity, and finally their own family and friends. These
findings were even more proven when the Researchers reviewed
Related literatures and studies, they found out that these things
certainly are the factors that affect a student’s career choice,
proof of that is the Researches conducted by Wildman Torres
(2002) and Pascual (2014), after that the Researchers started to
form the Methodology that they will use in finding out the data
they needed for this study, in doing so they decided that they will
use Survey Questionnaire Checklist in order to ensure accurate
data and avoid any unwanted variables, then through sampling a
total of 135 grade 12 students out of 202 was selected as their
respondents for their study and after finishing their survey, the
Researchers began to tally and tabulate the respondents answers
for gathering the data needed for their own study, in doing so they
began the data’s analysis and conducted their own interpretation,
and finally after organizing the acquired they began to formulate
their achieved conclusion for the study “FACTORS THAT
AFFECT IN CHOOSING FUTURE CAREER OF GRADE 12
STUDENTS OF BALUD NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL S.Y. 2022-
2023”.

-CONCLUSION
This study attempted to see the fundamental variable that
affect choices of the student’s career which includes the factors,
reasons, advantages, and job opportunities that affect in choosing
their future career, these factors gave an impact towards the
graduating learners in selecting a course in college.
The findings imply that the various factors that influence a
student’s career choices are adaptable regardless of age, gender,

34 | P a g e
or family wealth. Students who pursue their dreams are conscious
of their abilities and knowledge. Parents must supervise their
children in all aspects of their lives, including decision making.
While parents can influence their children’s choices, young adults
must make their own. Certain students consider their current
financial difficulties and how they might affect their parent’s ability
to work. They fear that their parents will be unable to meet the
requirements of they want to pursue. Adolescent share a great
deal of information with their peers, including their dreams. This
cannot be ignored, as they perpetually present. They can have an
effect on the judgements that individuals must take on occasions.
On the other hand, students can work independently and choose
their careers with or without assistance from classmates or peers.

-RECOMMENDATION
After finishing this study’s conclusion, the Researchers
formulated the following Recommendations based on the entirety
of the contents of this Research Paper Mainly in its Final
Conclusion.

1. Guardians must aid their youngsters and allow them to

observe on the higher group with a very good quality of both
training and skills.
2. Prior to the career, students should completely give
themselves to the education program to be practiced for
them to enhance their talents, to be successful, to have a
stable activity and to earn higher revenue.
3. School counseling should be able to educate the students so
as to be aware of various environmental factors that might
be influencing their career choice.
4. Students themselves should be aware of these factors and
try to avoid those factors that might affect their career choice
in a negative way.

35 | P a g e
5. Parents and Guardians should not decide a student’s
decision for themselves, and instead should give them
advice that will help them in their career choice.
6. Students must first all there is to learn about their desired
career before making a decision.
7. To the next Researchers that might attempt this study, it is
useful if you use a Survey Questionnaire Checklist in your
Methodology.
